Brother MFC-8400 My Brother MFC-8400 worked flawless for 4 years. Now it has a problem that it makes huge sound and the incoming fax does not come out and the paper jams. Any Clue? Mostly concerned about the sound it makes? Thanks

I own 7 of these machines and I absolutely love them, but I have one that makes a terrible grinding noise at startup, and then the paper jams. I've done some snooping inside and it looks like the gear that turns the fuser roller is jumping. I see no stripped gears, but the paper is not moving past the drum.

It is exactly the same as you described. I went on to Agson.com and wasn't sure which part to order. Can you supply the part number or at least how expensive it is? Alternatively, I would just assume buy another machine - same make and model because I have had it x 4 years and it has worked great.

    Thanks.

I found out what the problem was with my machines. It is the gear at the end of the fuser roller. I was able to buy the part at Agson.com and I repaired 3 machines myself. It was quite complicated, but after I did the first one, the other two took only minutes.

Fax will not print: I connected the fax machine and plugged it in. It sends faxes OK. When a fax is sent to it, nothing comes out. The sending fax doesn't receive an error message, seems like all went...

Does the machine print anything? such as a directory or print when making a copy? I rather suspect it does not. When an incoming fax is recvd does the paper get pulled in and come out blank? If so your problem is with printing (or lack of it). Perform head cleaning. Also make sure the black cartridge still does not have its deal stuck on it. Post again if you still have problem.

First guess is you have a bit of dirt (often white-out from people scanning corrected paper that's not quite dry) stuck on the fax scan window. This should be described pretty well in your user manual (which you can download online from brother.com).

Its also possible that there is dirt (typically loose toner) on the laser scan window (there's a laser that shines through it to get the image pattern on the drum). That window is often along the bottom of the unit under the drum/cartridge (take the cartridge out and look). The Brother manual I've seen seems to ignore this possibility.

Print streaks DO NOT mean cartridge drum replacement in many cases !! On brother Intellifax or MFC or other laser copier/printer/fax, keep in mind that either the fax/copy scan window OR the laser scan window can get dirty. If the fax scan window is dirty, you see streaks on outgoing faxes and copies (but NOT incoming faxes). If the laser scan window is dirty, you see streaks on all prints (copies, faxes, print-from-computer).

Note also that when transporting/moving some laser copier with the toner cartridge inside, the toner can get out and make a big mess inside (including getting the laser scan window dirty). An air compressor can be usefull to blow it out. And sometimes using alcohol to clean is a BAD idea (maybe incompatible with plastic and rubber parts). A damp rag is probably fine.

If you have the book, go through the setup procedure as if you were installing it for the first time. If you don't have it, go to the Brother website and download it.

see manual (can be download from homepage www.brother.com). If you are a victim of spam faxes you better buy a new mfc with a pc-fax-incoming-transmission function (e.g. mfc 440cn etc.) This will give you the opportunity to have a look at the faxes on the screen first and then to decide which one should be printed.

Brother MFC6800 not printing

To answer more effectively - how is the printer connected to the iMac? Is it a USB connection, a printer cable, is the MFC 6800 connected to a print server, an AirPor, etc? A second question I have is if you are trying any kind of tricky printing such as manualduplex printing.

Also, a shot in the dark...Is the Auto Reduction set to on or off? To check:
1. Press MENU/SET, 2 (Fax), 1 (Setup Receive), then 4 (Auto Reduction).

2. Press the up or down navigation key (keys located above and below the
MENU/SET key) until the display shows "Reduction: ON?".

3. Press MENU/SET.

4. Press STOP/EXIT.

Another item to keep in mind:
You can use three sizes of paper for printing your faxes and
copies---letter, legal and A4. When you change the size of paper you ha
ve loaded in the Brother machine, you need to change the setting for the paper size so your Brother machine can fit the incoming
fax on the page. To set the Paper Size:

1. Press MENU/SET, 1 (General Setup), then 1 (Paper Size).

2. Press the up or down navigation key to select LETTER, LEGAL, or A4.

3. Press MENU/SET.

4. Press STOP/EXIT.
