Question about Gateway MX8711 Notebook

Laptop Gateway mx8711

My latop will not turn on and I dont understand why. It was fine two days ago and suddenly yesterday 6/23/08, I went to turn it on and it did and then suddenly it just turned off. I have not been able to get it working. It is only 2 years old and nothing as spilled on it as well. I am wondering if maybe the battery just died. I would appreciate your help;

    I purhcased my notebook in January 2007. 11 months later, my system
    suddenly blinked out and would not reboot, could not power up at all. I
    took it back to Best Buy where I purchased it, and they had it for 3
    weeks. They were suppose to have replaced the AC Adapter (ADP AC ADTR
    65W part # 2522763RGWY) and the motherboard (SYB Systemboard w/UMA
    943/GML 1394 SONIC-C-QUANTA, part # 4006172RGWY).
    months later, yesterday, my notebook once again did the same thing as
    before and will not power up at all. I don't understand why this has
    happened twice in less than 2 years. The computer is in good condition.
    I use it for business only. I am always connected to a power strip to
    protect against surges.

    Can someone guide as to what to do. My
    warranty expired and I do not want to spend $1000 bucks to replace
    another Motherboard, especially not knowing why this has happened
    again. I can not afford to replace a motherboard every 6 to 7 months.

    I desperately need my computer for work, and would like to be able to resolve this matter expediently.

    I have the same problem. It was related to the battery and the power port. I also had replaced the AC adapter. I will never buy a Gateway product again!

    I used my mx8711 oneday, the next it would not power up at all. I was told the mother board needed to be replaced. Will this be the last time or is this problem recurring Threekev

    My machine was running, and just went black. I have two of these machines, so I switched the batteries and power supplies. The system is dead. I now wonder when the other one is going to die.

    Twice in two months, same as everyone else. Of course the warranty has expired. I get on occasion the Gateway screen, then it goes black ... which serves as a reminder of the brand I should stay away from in the future.

    I had the same exact problem and called Gateway and was told it would be $600 for a new motherboard. I was told by a local company that fixes computers that there have been a slough of MX8711's come in, some more than once with the exact same issue and that their tech found that the internal power regulation section of the motherboard is undersized for this model and typically runs overheated and eventually burns out. Since it is permanently attached to the motherboard the whole thing has to be replaced. Too bad, it is a nice laptop.

    Almost 2 years to the day and my MX8711 Gateway quit. Won't power up! Gateway will not even talk to me about it. They know there is a problem with them. Shame on Gateway.To repair costs more than it cpost new.
    I Will never buy another Gateway or related computer. I am telling the same to everyone buying a computer. Everyone should boycott Gateway! They do not support their faulty products.

Gateway laptop is really ****.
I bought Gateway MX8711 in March 2007, after 6 months i use it...the hard disk failed.
Gateway replaced a new Hitachi hard disk for me but not more than 8 months and it failed again.
Gateway told me that i have no more warranty because the repair warranty is only 90 days.
I bought this laptop and use it not more than 2 years, the hard disk was failed twice.
Usually Hard disk manufacturer provided 3 years warranty for the hard disk. The manufacturer year of the hard disk is May 2007....they should able to help because the har disk not more than a year being used...but they don't. This is really bad customer service and not fair to the buyer.
I will not buy any Gateway products anymore....i swear.

Y Gateway mx8711 does not write cdr or dvd's it reads them fine but does not write.

Is the WARRANTY on the computer still valid?

Either way, take your computer to a repair shop, and get the "broken" optical drive replaced.

I have a Gateway MX8711 Laptop and all of a sudden it powered off and even when I plugged in the power cord thinking that it may be the battery, it still will not power back on. What could be the problem?...

It should still run while plugged in dead battery or not. Depending on the age it may just have worn out. Power supply may be dead, that would be my guess.Most shops will charge a $70 fee to test it.

Certain years of brand new Gateways has a horrendous history of dying leading to a lot of "refurbished" machines being unleashed on the public.

Gateway MX8711 ran hot. Now will not power up

It sounds like the laptop has had some sort of thermal problem. Do you use it in a dusty/dirty environment? Did the laptop blower fan seem louder than it normaly was in the past? Any number of things (including age) could cause a laptop's fan to stop/work ineffectually and cause it to overheat.

My Gateway laptop that I purchased two years ago has stopped working all of a sudden yesterday. I was on it and had to restart it a couple of times yesterday and then finally when I went to turn it back...

I reccommend you open the laptop and remove the bios battery. this is a small flat round shape battery, leave out of the machine for 20 minutes, then insert it again and power on the laptop. :)

Try the following guide

There are no guides from Gateway for the keys available for the but this guide will be more than enough to help you through this one in order to remove them. Its should be completely the same principle.

Cleaning the keys should be done without alchohol based cleaners because the lettering might be erased. Use some soap and warm water instead and gently scrab with a soft brush the bottom of the keys.

Please remember to take out your laptop battery/ac adaptor in any case since you will be working at hardware level with your equipment.
