HP M1050Y - not powering up after power surge

Lightning hit the house while PC was in sleep mode. Surge protector still has greenlight and the green light is on at the back of the PC but that's about it. When I click the ON/START button no sound at all.

I took the power supply out and was wondering if I bring it to best buy, would you be able to diagnose it or do I have to bring the entire box.

Thanks :-)

The green light at back is probably the NIC or network interface card, which means the computer is receiving power. Just not enough apparently. Try changing the power cords from being plugged into the surge protector to being plugged dirctly into wall socket. When you do this take the ethernet cable out before turning it ON.

Control button locked. when I turn ooff PC the sleep light will not turn off.

Typically, the computer is defaulted to stay turned off after an electrical outage. To start the computer from scratch again, hold the power button in for several seconds. If it powers off, wait a minute, then hold the button in again to start it. When the screen comes up that says it didn't shut down properly, choose Safe Mode without networking. It will look like it is hanging on several files, normal, let it go. The screen & icons will be large because it is in default VGA mode. Once it stops loading, go to the Start Button & choose Restart. Things will return to your chosen default settings and most things will work again providing you have an EMI/RFI Surge Protector power strip that everything was plugged into. I have had several fail after a power surge, they are supposed to. Some have insurance should you have electrical damage after a power surge that got beyond the strip. Ultimately, $15-$50 is cheaper than your PC &/or monitors damaged by not having one, they are designed to be the Sacrificial Lamb & be the cheap breaking point.

As an added note, people confuse Sleep Mode with Hibernate Mode. Sleep mode means anything you are working on gets suspended into your available memory while it goes into Power Saving mode. On a power loss, all will be lost, save regularly if you use this mode.

Hibernate uses a space on your hard drive to write the information. Power loss, nothing is lost and on waking up or powering back on, your data will still be where you left off, usually intact. To restore from either mode without electrical loss, hit the ESC key. Exceptions will occur if you use Hibernate mode but only have a power strip for your multiple plugs. A power surge can still damage your computer because it wasn't blocked by the EMI/RFI power strip.

How do you know which one you have ? If you only have an On/Off power switch, you have an unprotected power strip. If you have a button on the side of that switch, known as a Reset Switch, you have a protecting one. Even if the Reset Button doesn't restore the power strip, it gave it's blife to protect your computer equipment. Cheap insurance.

Good luck.

No power cannot turn on

Suggest you check the simple stuff first.

Not checking is akin to a car that won't start, and tearing apart the entire fuel system, only to find it was just out of gas.

1) Make sure the receptacle the surge protector is plugged into, has power. Surge protector Power On light should be lit.

2) Check THE receptacle in the surge protector, that the computer itself, is plugged into.
Have had a number of expense surge protectors, where just THAT receptacle was bad.

("Hmmm, surge protector Power On LED light is lit. Monitor, printer, sound system, and router plugged into the surge protector has power. Should be good to go.

NOT!
Plug a table lamp, or similar device into THAT receptacle.
Make SURE it has power)

Surge protector, and receptacle in surge protector checks out?
Bypass the Power On switch.

See if the problem is a $5 Power On switch, or the Power Supply.

(Generic ATX Power On switch that I have found fits many computers,

http://www.directron.com/atxswitch.html

{The Power On switch, is located inside the plastic Power On button assembly}

This is information about computer Power Supply's,

This is a basic example of an SMPS, (Photo at upper right. You can click on the photo to enlarge), and info about.
(Switched-Mode Power Supply. The main type of power supply used in personal computers),

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Switched-mode_power_supply

By bypassing the Power On switch, you will be able to determine if the problem is the switch, or Power Supply.

Bypassing the Power On switch turns the Power Supply on?
Bad Power On switch.

Bypassing the Power On switch does Not turn the Power Supply on?
Bad Power Supply.

A jumper wire is used on the 20, or 24-pin ATX main power cable.
The jumper wire goes to the Soft Power On, (PS_ON. Green in color), to ANY Ground wire.
(ALL Black wires are Ground wires)
A MOMENTARY contact is used.

(Example of a 24-pin ATX main power cable, and it's respective connector,

http://www.playtool.com/pages/psuconnectors/connectors.html#atxmain24 )

In order to guide you in this procedure, I need to know the computer manufacturer name, and Model Number.

On a desktop computer this will be located on the Back of the computer tower, (Next to the Windows product key), or up on the side of the tower.
Some models have it where there is a door you open in the front, and the product number, or model number is located there.

Unplug the computer from the power cable. Take the cable and try it on anything else you have that uses a similar power cable. (TV, Stereo tuner, just take a look around the house). Back to the Desktop computer: Press and hold the power button on the front panel for 10-15 seconds with it unplugged. Plug the computer back in and try to restart it. If it still does not power up you need to have the power supply tested.

Unplug it and then blow a hairdryer at the power supply for 3 minutes. Leave the lid on, just blow the hairdryer at it from the outside. Craziest trick I ever saw.

After that, turn off hibernation. And eventually, replace your power supply.

My compaq sr1020nx wont turn on. green lite on power supply is blinking. power company turned off power and when it came back on this is what i found. computer was hooked up to a surge protector.

Surge protectors blow with excesive power not with drop and return spikes, and that doesnt still promise that it will not kill power supplies and motherboards. I would suggest a new power supply as they are all standard then see if it works. If not your motherboard maybe shot if it was on while it happened.

A surge protector stops power surges from eskom etc. from fryin your mother board and power supply. when the power goes off sometimes its just a phase . when all phases are off and the power comes back to all Phases instantly at a strong output this can fry your mother board or damage your power supply . surge protector keeps the power at one level even if it isnt , make sense? Also see UPS.Lightning can do the same effect too
