Question about GE Spacemaker JVM1640SJ Microwave Oven
We have had a GE SpacemakerXL Microwave Oven (Model JVM1650 or 1651) since 2000. The other day, while heating some food, it made a noise and went completely dead.
If you have any ideas about what could be wrong and whether it could be fixed for a reasonable cost, I would appreciate it.
Sandy, i think your magnetron just went bad. can you see if there is a black spot or dirt accumulating on the microwave guide cover. it is the gray rectangular thing at the side of the wall . these black spots are from oil or food that have accumulated and has been heated over and over again untill it becomes carbon and becomes conductive. these carbon then conducts electricity to the metal casing holding the wave guide cover. if this happens, the tip of the megnetron would spark against the wall and burn the tip of the magnetron and short it out. if it has a fuse, it could pop out and might still save the magnetron. if there is none, then you could have end up with a bad magnetron. decide how much a magnetron first before you buy a new oven. i hope i was able to help.
