The white lever is intact, and it moves very freely. Is that right?
How can I tell if it needs replacement?

    Thanks for the help.

I have the opposite problem; the line comes off very quickly...... from what I can gather the problem sounds like the lever needs replacement in both our cases.

check out www.toolpartsdirect.com for parts diagram

go to B&D type model # & in large diagram. lever / either white or black. at the end of the lever there should be a plastic pin part of the lever that facing the spool.about 3/16 that stakes out. if not then thats the problem. 100 % causing the line not to feed.or maybe the line are intangled or overlapping also a problem

Get a new trimmer. All the teeth on the gear wheel, attached to the motor, is plastic and has won out. This has caused the belt to slip of the wheel so the motor spins but the trimmer doesn't. The **** *** thing is you have to buy the entire motor assembly to get back the wheel.

Just bought a TE475. can't figure out how to replace the line compared to the traditional one-line configuration I am used to

Here is the info from the manual, the replacement line is put in near the center of the spool on the top of it, you simply feed it in. I have included a link to the manual so you can see the pictures. Look at page 10 for these instructions.

Need to replace the wirefeed? Purchased 8" orange

Hi gramcherry1...

1 Press the lock and rotate the spool counter-clockwise or some will remove the center knob.
2 Remove the locking ring if your weed eater has one.
3 Take off the automatic feed button.
4 Wipe away any dirt and debris.
5 Push down on the spool to release the locking tabs.
6 Remove the spool from the chamber.

Restringing the Weed Eater
1 Feed one end of the line into one of the holes of the spool, and secure the end that was inserted
2 Wrap the line in the direction of the arrows. Do this until until you fill the spool up with line.
3 Secure each of the lines into its own upper and lower grooves.
4 Re-install the spool into the chamber from which it was removed.
5 Pass the lines into the left and right holes and snap the spool into place.
6 Once the spool is in its sleeve and fed into its left and right eye holes, pull both ends simultaneously.
7 Reinstall the locking ring if necessary, reinstall the center knob.

Black and Decker electric trimmer (grass hog) model GH600...eats thru line, one spool lasts about 3 minutes

It sounds like that the automatic line release is damaged.

1. Remove and clean all debris from the head. I assume that you have already done this if you have changed the line a few times, but just make sure.

2. Remove the the head from the shaft.

3. There should be a large spring in there. If its broken, damaged or missing that will allow the head to spool line pretty fast. again make sure all debris is removed from this area.

4. Check the feed dogs in the same area as the spring. If they are worn the same problem will occur.

5. Install line on the spool.Make sure that it is wound the proper direction. There should be arrows indicating this. The line wound in reverse will also cause the same problem as well.

6. Put it all back together and see if works now.

7. If this doesn't solve it you may need to replace the head assembly.

Good luck!

My Balck&Decker Grasshog won't automatically feed line.

Just replace the LEVER, Item #29, Part #598435-00, for about $3.00 (B&D, Dewalt). Just pull old level straight out (pliers) and push replacement in. Level end expands to hold it in place. No other parts. Forget cleaning and replacement the spool, graphite or oiling... just replace the lever.

Auto feed spool doesn't work

You may need to purchase a new spool housing, which may not be too hard to do, if you have one of the name brand trimmers. This replaces the whole mechanism that holds the line, the retaining ring, etc.

Please check your line diameter. If you are using stronger line than specified in the manual, it could be the root cause.
