I had to reset my Zen and I lost most of my songs and all of my videos. Now when I power it up it always reads that it is rebuilding. Also, when I connect it to my laptop, my laptop does not recognize it.

Same problem. Disc drive replaced, Creative firmware downloaded to PC but when I try to download onto player, get a Windows message, "Player not connected". Tried holding the play/pause button down for 15 seconds and longer after unplugging and reconnecting player--seemed to work but "player not connected" message still popped up just before the PC to player download completed. Tried to reboot player afterwards, got "firmware problem" message from player screen. Still won't work. May try Creative's hourly tech help over the phone if no one has better idea.

I had the same issue with my zen vision m. It was not recognized on any computer (although it would charge) and I noticed that when I turned it on after having it off for any amount of time, the zen would rebuild half way before turning on.
If this is what is happening with you, then this one solution I found to fix it:
Download the MP3 Recovery Tool from Creative Support website. Make sure that your Zen is charged at least half.   Turn on your Zen, Holding the power switch in the on position (Very Important!). While holding the Power switch on, Reset the Zen by inserting a small object in the Reset hole on the bottom of the Zen (small objects can include thumbtack, wire, earring, etc...). You will see a menu: Clean Up, Format, Reload OS/Firmware, Reboot. (It is now safe to stop holding the Power switch) I decided to go down the list until something worked.  I ran Clean Up first and that didn't work for me, so I tried Format.  It will remove all of your data. Once Format runs, Reboot the MP3 player and plug it up to the computer. Run MP3 Recovery Tool. The firmware should should install itself on your MP3. Once installed, your computer should recognize the Zen.
I hope this helps!

Yesterday my Zen VM wouldn't start uo. When it did I got the recovery screen. I tried formatting the drive and got a hard disc error. Looked on the web and was horrified and the cost of a repair. It was cheaper to get a new one on ebay. In desperation I tried dismantling it in the hope I could just plug in another drive. The best bit was when I put it back together it worked. I am wondering it connections on the drive had become corroded. Unplugging the drive and plugging it back in cured this. Just hope it stays working.

About the first problem described here: inability to reload the firmware because the device is not detected.

    1) Creative is unable to help. After a few mails exchanges, they just conclude they could offer some % if purchasing a new device...
    2) When browsing the web you could discover that the creative firmware reload program is only compatible with Windows XP SP2 (not SP3, the last one in October 2010) and Windows media 10 (nothing above)
    3) I found somebody with a windows XP computer, with SP2 and Windows media 10: the creative firmware reload program works!!! Unfortunately, It fail to finalise the firmware update successfully, probably because of a hardisk failure.

I've had the exact same problem with mine. After surfing around, I found the following info at http://www.thegadgetdr.com/Zen-Vision-M-30GB-Repair-Hardware-Failure-p/rs-zvm-30gb.htm

Is your Zen Vision:M displaying one or more of the problems below:

- Does not power on; dead
- Is not recognized by the computer
- Zen overheats/gets hot to the touch
- Gives "Firmware Problem" message
- Gives "Firmware Update Failed!" message
- Gives "Power Surge" message
- Gives "Harddisk Problem" message
- Keeps freezing up or getting stuck
- Stuck in Recovery Mode
- Randomly flips between songs and radio
- The USB connector/port and/or its pins are damaged
- There are loud clicking sounds coming from the Zen
- Zen freezes when connected to computer via USB
- Rebuilds the library but doesn't ever finish, or takes 30+ minutes to finish
- Cannot format the hard drive
- Cannot upgrade the firmware

If so, then your Zen has a hardware failure.

At one point, when I re-set my Zen M, the screen did flash "Hard Disk Problem", so I suspect that I've got a hard disk failure of some sort.

Places online that do hard disk replacement of this model (Gadget Doctor, ZenRepair) want upwards of $100.00 to replace the hard disk. I bought mine refurbished from Buy.com last Thanksgivin for $100.00, so I guess I'll be switching to Sandisk!

Really i don't know what the problem is. the creative doesn't charge and when it charges don't do anything

the player seems to need longer charging:
1. while player switched OFF: let it load on ac-adapter or USB-connection**** for about 1 hour, until the screen lights up.
2. still while player switched OFF: let it load another 2 to 3 hours
to get it fully charged.

**** notice: when using USB for charging:
1. Install the application software (from CD or Creative-download)
2. Preferred is a USB-connection at the backside of the computer
3. When more USB-connections are used, have the others disconnected: trying not to overload the USB-port power-consumption.

Firmware problem

No take-backs. You can re-download the firmware. First you need to fix your player connection problem by going to Control Panel=>Uninstall Software and uninstall/downgrade WMP11 and WMP11 runtime. You should have WMP10 afterwards. Then go to Control Panel=>System=> go to the Devices tab and uninstall portable devices driver showing as the MTP Device. Restart. Connect your player via USB and it should be detected. Then go to Creative's website and get a firmware utility for your player by navigating the website. The update should happen automatically after you run the utility.

Zen vision 30 gb front buttons don't respond

Go to the Creative website and D-load the firmware renewal utility for your player. It should detect the player via USB automatically and find the firmware for it via the Internet connection. No buttons required.

Firmware problem for zen vision M

Try this: disconnect the player from the computer, turn it off, hold in the volume + button, and reconnect the player to the computer while holding the volume + button in. Keep holding the volume + button for an additional 5-50 seconds. Windows should eventually go into recovery mode and revive the player- it will pop up a window that says Found New Hardware Wizard

Vision M not recognized

I'm having the exact same problem. My zen is 'charging' but isn't detected anywhere on my pc and I'd leave it charging for days but nothing happens. I've tried different usb ports, reinstalling the software several times but nothing. I recently reinstalled Windows and with my new pc my Zen cannot work on it for some reason?! I put previous files from my old pc onto my Zen hoping that I could transfer them onto my new Windows pc but I fear I've lost the data on my Zen completely. Arggh, any suggestions guys? Please..x

Firmware reload

Make sure you have media player 11
If you can, the best test is to try your player with another PC, to see if you still have the problem. This localises whether the problem is with the PC (most likely the USB) or the player. See the link below (search on "connection problems") for a lot more troubleshooting on this.
Download recovery tool off creative's website.
go to my computer > click on hardware tab >
click on device manager button > in the is next screen on the bottom should have>>universal serial bus controllers
(write these down just in case it cant find them)
right click on them and uninstall
reboot let windows reinstall them

Also told Microsoft hotfix causes this problem try uninstalling the last hotfix
If that doesn't fix it try the USB cable

Cannot reload firmware

I had the Exact same problem and no one had a good solution, i only found one that finally worked after spending 4 freakin hours tryin to fix it. anyway here is the solution.

you need to use a computer that has Windows XP, then if the computer is running any version of Windows media player other than 10, roll back or upgrade to Media player 10. restart the computer.

Now, you need to download and run http://www.delldjsite.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=462 honestly i have no idea what it does. my guess is it reinstalles the USB ports but thats only a guess. but i was so frusterated by the time i found this solution that i was willing to try anything. so download this file, unpack it and run it. then it will ask you to restart. when your computer is restarted run the new firmware file ( i used 1.62.2.0) and it works.

Why? i have no idea, but it i was pumped. the origional site i got this solution from is http://www.anythingbutipod.com/forum/showthread.php?t=18864

Zen vision:M and vista don't work together

It might be a firmware problem. Creative's website should have the latest firmware which you can flash to the unit, then reinstall the drivers again using the latest driver from the web site.
