Have you gone to the laptop manufactures web site to see if there is is updated drivers for the usb ... also - when was the last time you visited the windows update site (if you have windows) or the update site of the MAC and or Linux os update repositories.
have you tried other peripherals in the usb ports ( to see if they in fact work)

most of the mp3 players are recognized without installation cd itself. please answer me the following questions 1. are you using your mp3 player for the first time in your computer or you uninstalled the software and lost the cd .
2. what happens (or shown )in the screen of the player when you connect the device to your pc
If you install the itunes version 7.5 that you downloaded, you wont lose your music library. It is a separate file from the programs installation files. You don't need to uninstall the previous version, the new one will install on top of it.
