I have a Garmin Nuvi 200W and have been receiving a message that it needs to be updated. Would I need a special accessory cord to connect to my computer? Also, is there a charge for updates? Thanks in advance for your consideration.

That could be an update for maps or software..... software updates are free... new maps are from 50 to 60 dollars..... but do a software update first...if your maps are more that 2 years old i would buy new map

with the unit Off...... connect your gps to your computer using the usb cable..(usb cable is the same connection most cameras use to connect to computers)

your computer will detect new hardware (usb) minimise pop up box

next

go to www.mygarmin.com register your gps (free) it too will detect your gps model and let you update Firmware and Maps

it will tell you to download WebUpDater utility to transfer files to your gps... Done !

The original power cord had a short in it and when I replaced with a Garmin replacement, the NUVI 200W will only run on the battery. when it is plugged in, it just charges and will not run.Is there a way...
Yes it is, but it is tricky. The powercord for using Garmin in gps-mode has a special resistor between two cables. It is cheaper to buy a new at Ebay or simular.

I think I probably have a UBS cord for this. but
yes you got one when you purchased your garmin. it has the typical flat end for the computer and a much smaller trapezoidal end for the garmin. I would go to a radio shack store with the nuvi and see if they can provide a cord. OR go to garmin.com and order a new one. ................or hit up a buddy who also has the garmin nuvi. good luck.
