In this case the MOST effective way is to try some so-called data recovery software. See if you can get back some data.

First of ALL - Connect your hard drive to your personal computer. And install this software Wondershare Data Recovery on the computer in order to perform data recovery. Get the program from its site.
data recovery (for Windows OS)
Mac data recovery (for Mac OS X)

Good luck. I hope that my reply has shed some light on the problem! Remember - Always make Backups of your precious data!

Since your drive is making strange noises, from my experience, I can tell you your hard drive is smoked. You won't be able to use software to recover data from it.

The drive platters that hold your data may or may not be scrachted. Its sort of like a record players arm coming loosing from rest and falling across the record. This is what usually happens when a hard drive is dropped.

There are companies that do do hard drive data recovery. Prices usually end up around $500 but could vary on how bad sectors are damaged by the read write head of your drive.. What they do is disassemble your hard drive, move the platters over to another special drive mount and start pulling the data off.

Here are some links to get you started.

Sorry I can't give you some better news than this. Hard drives aren't designed to sustain falls.

Seagate freeagent 1 tb fell on the floor. when I connected it again it said 0 no partition found - what to do? I don't want to lose any data on it. thanks, Eli

If you are lucky and there is no scracthes on hdd disks, you can recover your files but not at home. Go to a recovery data office in your area and they can test your hdd and tell you what to do next. Do not try to recover data with any software because you can damage irrevesible your hdd and lose all your data.

the drive is damadged internally, you have to phone or email a data recovery centre to get your data back, that can cost $1500+ because of the size of the disk.

It does sound like you have the "click of death"

You could try remove the drive from its enclosure and connect it direct to a computer. If however it still clicks ticks or whines badly the it is probably toast.

You can however buy just a drive and put it in the enclosure. then maybe use crazy glue to hold it down.

A far as recovery goes then if it does not work on your computer directly then the other options is very expensive data recovery services

Dropped my external harddrive

Here are some suggestions that might work in a knocked up drive: First, put your drive in a freezer for a day. Place the drive in a sealed bag and get as much air out or vacuum seal if need be. After freezing, quickly insert the drive into your computer. This seems to temporarily reset the heads in the hard drive to allow you to recover and copy some of your important files for a short period. Second, take it to a data recovery service center. They will retrieve the data for you but I would like to warn this will be a bit expensive.

Seek rate problem in Seagate 200 GB

Hey, I recommend you test the harddrive with seagates own tools.

http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/seatools/

I recommend the dos version.

Also try active smart
http://www.ariolic.com/activesmart/index.html

I would recommend backing up all the data from the drive, and then if the drive still has problems You should send it for warranty repairs. Shouldnt cost a thing.

You can also take it to a local pc repair shop to get all the data copyed and then sent to warranty service if nessasary it will cost thought if you do it via a shop.
