I have a power book g4 (13 inch screen) that will not boot-up. Can someone please try to help?
Here's the problem. When I turn on the computer, I hear the chimes, I get the gray screen with the apple and swirling circle like usual, but once the screen turns blue and it says that it's "starting Mac OS X" it freezes here. It just sticks on this screen, or sometimes it moves past this screen to just a plain blue screen with a swirling circle sign which continues to endlessly swirl.
Before this problem started, I noticed that the computer had been running slow on the internet, (for the past two days) loading pages slowly (Yahoo for example), and moving between running programs like word/internet/icaldenar/etc. When it locked-up while using these programs simultaneously, I restarted the computer, and this is when the problems started.
My biggest concern is recovering files from my hard drive, as I do not currently have a backup. Some of the things I have already tried include,
1) Holding the shift key during the restart; didn't work.
2) Depressing the command + option + P + R keys, while waiting for the startup chimes three times and nothing.
Does anyone have an idea of what is going on and how I can fix the problem? Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Megan
It could be several things.
First things first:
• have you tried adjusting the screen brightness from the keyboard? (the keys are on the very top row)
• have you tried turning your laptop completely off and restart it?
• when you restart your machine do you hear the startup sound? If not it might be the machine itself.
• Does it have power?
• if you do not hear the sound, maybe it is not booting - if you hear the sound is the screen still black? (I assume this as you have not given any information about what "work" actually means)
• If you have access to another screen to connect it will show if it really is your screen there is a problem with. I believe your machine have a port for an extra screen.
Hope the first two suggestions help.
Or you may have to consult someone for hand on help.
During the boot process you will see on the screen to press a certain key to enter setup Press and hold that key during the boot up process to enter BIOS you can load failsafe defaultsor load optimized defaults ,press escape then press f10 to save to cmos to restart or During the boot process tap thef8 button three times this will boot into safe mode where the only things working will be your mouse and keyboard enabling you to attempt to repair your computer Also you might try Turn Off the computer, now as soon as you hit the power button, keep on holding "Alt" key & keep on tapping "F10 key,ie: Alt+F10, it will open the recovery console ,select full factory restore and follow on screen instruction. (Note:this will erase all datas on the computer) hope this helps
The grey screen is the bios of your laptop is booting, this is freezing for some reason.
Do 3 things.
Try holding power button down for longer at least 10-20 seconds.
do a PRAM reset, apple symbol, alt P & R keys all held on boot up.
Do a smc reset.
Shut down the computer.
Disconnect the MagSafe power adapter from the computer, if it's connected.
Remove the battery.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
Release the power button.
Reconnect the battery and MagSafe power adapter.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.

Remove the battery and try boot the machine on AC power only. If the computer starts up turn it back off, reinsert the battery and try to boot the computer again. If it still won't boot with the battery inserted then i suggest you send or take the computer back as there is a hardware problem.
try holding down the alt key when you turn on your computer, as this may allow you to select your macintosh HD as the location of your operating system.
