If your running Vista, it might have been related to iTunes (if you use iTunes, it used to cause this problem). Take it to your local Best Buy and they should be able to run a quick fix for you. Depending on the store though, they might charge, or they might not. If they do, it will probably be $29.

Try putting the unit back on your laptop and using the windows disk management utility. The directions are below. Windows Vista is a bit differenct than either windows 7 or XP.

Right click on you "Computer" Icon in your start menu

A menu will open

Chose "Manage"

The Computer Management window will open

The Computer Management window is broken down into 3 sections.

The first section on the left side of the window shows a menu. Disk Management is on the lower portion of the menu.

The right side is separated into two sections, top and bottom. The top portion shows a list of active drives on the computer. The lower portion shows all drives connected to the computer. CD or DVD drives that have not disk will not show as active drives on the top section, but can be seen in the lower section.

The lower section will show the drive description, drive size and drive condition (online or off line) in small box on the left side of that section. Disk drives will designate a "Drive" and a number. Drive 0 is usually your internal hard drive. Then it would list drive 1, drive 2, etc, depending on how many internal and external drive sources you have connected to your computer. Then it will list your CD drives and generally show their drive letter assignments.

Next to the smaller section described above, is a larger section which shows the driver letter, size of the driver and condition (if working correctly will show "healthy")

This is the area you can right click and get a menu that will allow you to open, explore, mark the partition as active, change the driver letter, format the drive or delete a partition. (A note of caution here. Changing the driver letter on your main hard drive partition will cause windows to stop functioning. The main hard drive, or hard drive partition, is normally given the letter "C".) A hard drive may show two or more partitions with separate drive letters designated for each partition.

A drive that is having a problem may show that it needs to be formatted (status as Unformatted). This can be done from this window. An external drive, whether it is a hard drive or CD/DVD drive, can have the letter designator change done if you want to organize your external drives. There are times when a drive will not show up because the drive letter that they are programmed to use are taken. Most USB drives are programmed to us the letters "F" or "G". In this area, you can assign the USB drive any drive letter that is not being used and this will make it visible in windows.

See if this helps you manage the external disk and get it formatted so you can use it on your laptop.

If you found this answer helpful, please remember to leave positive feedback.

Thank You,

Brian

My son's acer will not find its dvd player. It doesn't even show up under my computer. Is there anything I can do to make it reboot?

Go to Start, then Control Panel, then System, then Hardware, then Device manager,
Click on the + sign next to the DVD/CD. Do you see a red X or a yellow exclamation mark?

right click on the DVD drive and select uninstall. then reboot.

Unless the drive is bad, this should help,

Blue screen problem in my computer.

So many computer face this blue screen fetal errors on windows.
This error comes usually when there is problem in software or driver compatibility issue with hardware or operating system. Also this error comes when there is bed indexing unit in hard drive. You can solve this errors with following 2 methods. (1)When you power up the computer press F8 key then enter in safe mode. Then if you are able to enter in safe mode then uninstall driver or software which you installed recently and face this error. (2)If you are not able to enter in safe mode Then you need to fix error on hard drive. For that you need windows disk or recovery disk. Boot your computer with that disk For that when you power up the computer press F1 or F2 "del" key to enter in bios. Then go to boot menu and set first boot device as your cd or dvd rom. Then save settings and exit bios. Insert windows disk in cd /dvd rom. Then it boot with that disk. Then you get this message "Press any key to boot from cd.." Then press any key. Then follow the procedure then enter in recovery console mode then type in prompt "chkdsk /r" Then type "y" Then it fix error on hard drive. Then check if again you are not able to enter in windows then boot again and this time choose "R" option for repair previous windows " then it repairs old windows then it loads again old windows. CD DVD drive not working

You can try a CD lens cleaner, see if its dust on the lens which is an issue. Failing that, I'd suggest you get it replaced under warranty. Start taking it apart and you warranty will be void.

Doesn't burn or play CD's or DVD's..it doesn't recognize the CD which is to be burned

check the my computer icon to see if your cd drive letter is listed. usually it is your D drive. If it is there and won't read CD's drive is either dirty or needs to be replaced. Pick up a CD drive cleaning kit.

CdRom drive not showing up on computer. CdRom works when push button but nothing comes up nor shows up in MY COMPUTER.

Check if the CD ROM is being detected in BIOS setup or not? In case it is not detected in BIOS, then make sure that all the cables that connect the ROM to the mainboard are okay. They should not be loose or broken. You may also try replacing the cables.

In case BIOS detects it but windows is unable to detect it, check in Device Manager to see for any disabled or unknown devices. To enter device manager, click on Start >> select RUN and type "devmgmt.msc" without the quotes and press Ok. Enable back the device from there and then check.
