Hi lawrence - try this and let me know what happens. After your pc boots up, press control+alt+delete. This will open your task manager. Click on new and type explorer and click on ok. Let me know what happens. If this solves your problem PLEASE rate this as fixed. If not, DON'T RATE IT YET. Add a comment letting me know what happened and I'll help you further. Thanks.

Hey lawrence - try booting in Safe Mode and see if your desktop appears. Right after you turn your pc on start tapping F8. This will take you to a boot option menu. Select Safe Mode and then let it finish booting. If your desktop is there, try doing a system restore. Go to Start>programs>accessories>system tools>system restore. This is not a system recovery and you won't lose any info. At the first screen click on next. Then choose a date that is in bold that is a few days prior to when the problem started. On the right side it should say system checkpoint. Then click next, follow the prompts and let it do it's thing. It will reboot and say if it was successful. Let me know what happens and give me some good news. Thanks.

Blank screen

A white blank screen? That sounds like the virus changed your display settings. Click Ctrl+Alt+Del to get to the task manager. Press and hold the Ctrl key plus the Alt Key then hit the Del key. When the task manager opens up Click File at the upper left corner of the window then select New Task RUN. When the create New Task Window opens type: explorer.exe and hit OK. See if it starts populating your desktop icons and shows the start menu and task bar. If so, the virus changed your settings.

To change your display background click Start/Control Panel and look for Display or Appearance and Personalization. When it opens select the Desktop tab and change the desktop background. Hopefully the white will go away.

You may have to get into Safe Mode to do the above if the virus disabled the Task Manager.

Can see the desktop and icons, but have no control over them with mouse - can click and doubleclick, but to no avail.

I think someone played a practical joke on you. I bet one of your friends changed your desktop to look like it has icons and then hid the real icons.

Right click on your desktop, and then under the "View" menu item, make sure "Show Desktop Icons" is checked.

Also, right click on the desktop and select "Personalize", then at the bottom of the dialog, select "Choose Desktop Background" and change your desktop background.

No icons on desktop

try to start in safe mode As the PC start tap F8 until a menu appears then choose safe mode If that works you could try the following
  1. do a system restore to a date before you hade the problem start>programs>accessories>system tools>system restore
  2. If that does not resolve the issue - try a clean boot http://support.microsoft.com/kb/331796 see if that fixes it- if it does - then we need to work out which startup file or process is causing the issue

Philips freevents laptop will turn on but show a black screen

Try start up in Safe Mode press F8. Choose Safe Mode, when at the choice window, to select either Safe Mode Desktop, OR System Restore, chooses system restore and choose a time before you had the "Problem" and follow instructions. This should get you back. If that doesn't work get back to me...

No icons or tool bar on desktop at startup

In your desktop, Right click your mouse and properties will show and look for show desktop option. And then move your mouse to the bottom of your computer screen, if toolbar will show, then your toolbar is set to automatic hide. Change the settings in your Taskbar and Start Menu Properties and change there the settings, uncheck the auto hide task bar.
