Well has it been dropped? If so more then likely the guide rail fall out of place and can easily be poped back in place. A good way to see if its your laser or guide rail is to fined the hole that when the lids closed this pin goes in the hole so the ps2 knows the lids closed and stick a piece of paper in that hole with lid opened. Now it should act like the lids closed. See if the laser produces a red beam or strange noises. Maybe even the little black piece at the back that stops the disc from spinning isnt working right. But dont get worried as theres a pin on the lid that makes the black piece pull back from the disc when lids closed so it might be stopping disc from spinng while its open. Several diffrent solutions need to know how you know its not spinning. If your just putting your head to it and cant hear it spinning then you will need to trouble shoot.
Hi,It could be one of 2 things, either your laser is on its way out or the motor in the dvd drive has run out of lubricant. The latter is quite obvious as the drive will be noisy when spinning!!!, if ur tech savvy and are capable of doing so, remove the drive from the xbox and open up the drive casing, the motor is situated under where the disc sits on the little black disc. There are 3 screws holding the motor in place, remove them and with gentle pressure pull the black section from the motor, clean thoroughly then place a couple of drops of wd40 or three in one oil onto the shaft. Re-assemble and that should fix your problem.
quite honestly with todays advancing technology fixing a ps2 is not worth it. buying a new or preowned one could in fact be cheaper. so i would opt for that as fixing it is more or less an unviable option
Laser issue is a commom problem on the ps2.The laser actually is controlling the spinning as well on ps2 machine and on the new ps3 too.
When the disk start, the spinner receive a kick back from the laser and after then that start the normal operation.
If the laser don`t send any impulse to the spinner the machine recognize a danger situation ang go on protection and stop the spinning process.
Replacing your laser will certanly solve your problem.
My ps2 has/had the same problem, it wouldn't read DVD movies at all and ps1 games were always hit or miss. The only two solutions i can suggest are cleaning the lens or replacing the little cotton pad that holds the disk in place near the laser. This seemed to fix it for me, it works about 85% of the time now. Hope one of these helps
