Question about Maxtor One Touch III 500GB FireWire/USB2.0 External w/16M buffer Retail ****... 500 GB USB 2.0 Hard Drive
My laptop died on a few occasions while the Maxtor drive was pluggin in meaning it was not unplugged safely. After 6 months of working fine, now the drive makes no noise upon startup nor does the light flash on the main button when plugged in. The light on the AC adapter turns on green when i switch the drive OFF and then it goes off when turned ON. I am told this means the drive is dead. I need to retrieve the data - is there any easy way to do this?
many thanks in advance!
One of two things.
one, get someone to remove the main drive and load it into a computer to read the information. this costs and the best way.
second, throw it.
i bought the same hard drive, it was slow, too slow for my needs and then one day i found the folder which kept all my personal music was now zero.
i bought a 250gig toshiba hard drive 2 years ago. it is quick, safe and of all things, reliable.
the only fault is the light, it was so bright you could bring planes down with it, but a piece of masking tape toned that down.
but it works. it works so fine i am thinking of throwing the maxtor and getting another toshiba, and they are just as cheap.
I wrote to the comapny and since got no response, fine. i wont buy a maxtor item again. they lose, not me.
but a good computer shop will recover your data, if you can find an engineer even better, but expect to pay.
i am still trying to find an adaptor for the 2.5 drive to change it into a 3.5, some shops have this.
if you can get one of these then load it into your computer or get a caddy, expensive, but when you have finished use the caddy to put the biggest drive you want in.
the last item. the Toshiba has one thing the maxtor does not have, a switch.
caddies have switches. oh, when i said computer shops i mean a dirty little shop where someone knows what they are doing. If you get my meaning about big companies selling things they no nothing about at all about computers except its a box with a mouse and keyboard. also, they are dearer than the shop with someone who knows what they are doing.
someone said it was a power surge and it is adviseable to have a surge protection on any pc equipment.
but this was not the case since all my electrical items are so protected.
This is something i would not buy again. instead go for one who can have support, better still, back up everything on a true media. even a cd is better than having all your data wiped off a hard drive.
a pc is the most unrelable tool around. it will fail, mess up, blow up. a cd wont. make 5 copies and store in a cool dry place, even seal them. then you have a copy to replace what was lost.

Tips for a great answer:
"Select the [Drivers] you need from the "List."

"Download the Drivers!"
