Do a hard reset to clear the error

open up the camera, take out the little ultrasonic motor which moves
the lens in and out and controls the zoom, take this apart and found
rust on the interface between the rotor and stator.

    Clean this off
with ur finger tip, reassemble, and it now wil works flawlessly.

    Not so
easy to open up the camera, but it is a easy fix in ur
    case.

    thank you

you should first try to manually move the lens assembly by rotating the position sensor disc shown at A.

To expose this part of the camera remove the plate on the side of the
camera, remove all other exposed screws. Remove the back and front
cases. Leave the battery in so you can test if you were successful.

I am getting a message E18

The E18 error is an error message on Canon digital cameras. The E18 error occurs when anything prevents the zoom lens from properly extending or retracting.[1] The error has become notorious in the Canon user community as it can completely disable the camera, requiring expensive repairs.

2 seconds after the camera is set off there is an bip-bip sound and "E18" sign on the screen.

E18 error is caused commonly due to dust/sand particles getting lodged in the lens mechanism, between the barrels. Try blowing briskly or tap lightly with your fingers holding the lens down. If this doesnt solve the problem you have to take it to a service centre.

My lens for my canon powershot SD550 is stuck open.when switching the camera power on E18 appears on the screen in the bottom left corner.

The E18 error is fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension.

Here are some things that you can do to try to correct it. They only seem to work for about 40% of lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty they're worth a try.

Have a powershot sd550

After many complaints Canon posted this on their web site: "The E18 error code may be displayed if you apply pressure to the zoom lens, lens barrier or surrounding area when handling the camera. Hold the camera so that your fingers do not touch the zoom lens."
There is a lot you can try...

E18 is a lens error. My guess would be sand got into your lens (into the gears, etc.). These guys should be able to take care of you. http://www.darntoothysam.com/servlet/the-1730/Canon-Powershot-SD550-Camera/Detail
