Buy new clutch pressure plate and throw out bearing also clutch line up tool ..refer to moter manuel at public library they wont let youtake it out so photocopy the pages you need.please rate this info.

Your vehicle has a hydraulic clutch, and there really is no "adjustment." Verify fluid level in the clutch fluid reservoir, and consider replacing clutch plates if you are experiencing slipping.
It sounds like you have lost overdrive and it is slipping in third. Being a 1998, likely with a lot of miles the trans has probably burnt the direct clutches. If the ATF has a burnt smell then it's time for an overhaul.
The clutch or linkage needs repair.It happened on my Escort.It turned out to be linkage and was obviously much cheaper than a clutch.It sounds like linkage because even if the clutch was bad,it would kind of hesitate,rev strangely,be herky jerky,maybe even hard shift.Linkage problem is more like whatever gear you have is all you will get obviously because it is incapable to shift.Good luck! If your clutch is hydraulic, look next to the brake reservior..If the Master cylinder goes dry, you need to bleed it first....you can get an inexpensive m/c bleeding kit from aftermarket parts stores. Tons easier to do that way.
I accidentally rotated the spider gears out when putting a new axle seal on a 04' F-150. I didn't have the tool to compress the clutch packs so I removed the differential carrier and took it and the spider gears down to the local Ford dealership and they put them back in for $20.
