Question about PC Desktops

My usb ports are going out one by one. I have 3 total in my HP pavillion laptop. 6 months ago one of the just stopped working, for not apperent reason. Acouple of months later, the other one went out, and this one is on the other side of the laptop. Now I only have one left to work with, but I would like to figure this out. I have tried updating drivers, but it says it can't find them. I rebooted my operating system (I don't know if that was neccessary buy I'm desperate), and my drivers recovery CD did not help either. Any ideas?

    Hi Johnyu_05,

I tried it, but it didn't work. I also did a driver recovery, an application recovery, and an Operating System reboot all over again, just in case.

I have come to the sad conclusion that the USB's must be broken. I don't know how that happens. Although I did notice that connecting my iPod sometimes it would not recognize it, and I would have to restart the computer for it to recognize it. That happen in all of the USBs, so I'm not sure if it is related, since I still have one working.

Anyway, I have given up on the fixing since I can't replace the mother board, so now I'm looking for a plan B.

Do you have any advice for USB expansion that is not thru the last USB I have?
Some one told me about docking stations, but most are USB or express card, which I don't think I have (I have a PC card slot).
The other option I saw was the HPQuickDock, but I'm still not sure if it will work with my HP model (pavillion zx5000) which is considerably old. Are there any cables that could connect to the expasion port or the PC card slot and give me more USBs?

I'm in serious need to run external hardrives, scanners, printers, and others at the same time, so if you have any idea, no matter how complicated, please let me know.

Thanks for your previous advice, at least it gave me hope and direction!

Thanks, the card that uses the PCI slot really worked out. It actually expands my PCI slot to 2 USB and firewire too.

I have to carry the card, and the power cable around (they are not that big), but I don't have to worry about my last USB port getting messed up.

    Thanks again.

Hi dserdio,
im not sure of the availability of the item in your area but there is an expansion card (USB) that uses PCI slot. from there, you can attach external usb ports so that you can have more usb ports for your printer scanner etc

Hi dserdio,
Right click my computer
then select properties
hardware tab and then device manager
scroll down and expand Universal Serial Bus

do you see USB root HUB?
right click and un-install them.
reboot your laptop and wait for the system to recognize the USB root hub, it will auto install the drivers for it...

just make sure you dont have anything plug in to it.

ill wait for your feedback. hope its a fix. :)

Go to the device manager and uninstall the USB port drivers and restart your computer.

Here's how you can do that:

1. Right click on Computer Icon.
2. Click on Manage.
3. Click on Device Manager.
4. Go to the list and look for the USB port drivers.
5. Right click and uninstall.
6. Restart your computer.

You can also update the drivers in the computer to make it work great. You can use RadarSync to automate the updating process.

Every time I unhook my keyboard to clean the computer the keyboard won't work again and I have to go buy a new one. This has happened 3 times in the last 6 months.

If your keyboard uses a PS2 port which looks like this: (purple is for the keyboard)rambosteven_0.jpg You need to make sure to power off the computer. Then unplug the power cord from the PC to make sure there is no power at all going to the system as this can cause damage to the port or keyboard.
If the keyboard is a standard USB make sure you plug it back into the same port you had unplugged it from.

Your keyboard USB cord has probably become loose. Try reseating the cable into another USB port, or just reseating it if the keyboard uses a keyboard cord.
If this doesn't work, try a different keyboard (if you have another one around the house).
You may have either a bad USB port, dirty port, or bad keyboard.

HI coltronics,

It sounds like your port that your using is bad. If it's a ps/2 port, you may want to get a ps/2 to usb adapter and try it that way. If it's a usb port, try another port. I've not seen to many usb ports going bad, but you never know.

Good Luck.

How do i set up wireless internet on my hp pavillion a330n desktop? Do i need a wireless card or is it built in? and where do i put the wireless card if i need one?

Hello,

Yes you need a wireless adapter.

Solution one : Get PCI wireless adapter which you will insert in an empty PCI slot inside your computer.

Solution 2. Buy a USB wireless adapter, which you plug in a USB port.
However, if my memory serves me right, that particular HP pavillion is 5 or 6 years old, and it does support USB 2.0, just USB 1.1

My advice to you is to buy a USB 2.0 PCI card to be installed in an empty PCI slot )or in the one occupied by the firewire )if not needed). This card will provide 4 or 5 USB 2.0 adapters. Then buy a USB wireless adapter, which you will be able to use with other computers.

Hope It helps.

Hi!

Yes, you can use an external USB hub plug it to a working USB port. You can also use a PCMCIA USB card like this:
