SOURCE: Compaq S4 100 scanner won't work with new computer on MS Vista
I went to compaq's support site and got the XP drivers here: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=228&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&product=217323
I installed the drivers first S4-100 Color USB Scanner Drivers for Windows XP
Then installed the application: Vistascan Support Software Module for the Compaq S4-100 Scanner
*be sure all your "Windows Updates" are up to date.
Once installed I had to go to the default directory C:\VistaScan to find the .exe file. The software booted right up! But, it said the device was not on. I simply pulled the USB out and put it back in and it worked perfectly.
I imagine you might have to start up vista scan and pull the USB cord in and out every time you reboot your machine, which is kinda a cheap work around. However, it is a way to "give it to the man"!! and I like that idea ;)
