Thinkpad R50 Reboot problem

Have a Thinkpad R50. Running on battery, it boots up to desktop.. then reboots. This happens time after time. If I plug it in and use the AC adapter, it boots up and runs fine for hours on end. But I don't want to have to be tethered to a plugged in laptop. Help?

I checked the configurations. I set them all to NEVER hiberate or shut off. saved the configs. Then, I unplugged the power supply. The battery charge indicated it was at 100%. I started playing a solitaire game and in less than 30 seconds, the machine rebooted. Plugged the ac adapter back in.. and it's still up and running 1.5 hours later.

Have you checked your 'power configuration' when on battery? You should be able to access all of the different configurations while on A/C power so you're not fighting the rebooting mess.

It could be that the system is set to hibernate or whatever after SX number of minutes of inactivity, and it is making it look like a full reboot.

IT WANT LET READ ANYTHING OR REBOOT EITHER

So what happens when you press the power button to turn the computer on? Your statement doesn't tell us very much. When you say it won't let you read anything sounds like something is display on the screen but you can't read it. Is that true? And you said reboot either? You can always cut the computer off and press the power button to try and reboot it, even thought it might not be successful. Explain what is happening more clearly.

When you plug in the power cord is there any lightswhatsoever on the laptop, where the plug goes in or on the AC Adapter of thepower cord?

When you press the power button do you hear fans running, hard drive spinning, lights on the computer, hear any beeps or lights constantly blinking, hear theDvD/CD drive click and the light on the drawer of the DvD/CD turn on for asecond or two? If so the laptop is trying to boot or may have booted, butthe screen is not showing for some reason.

Beep tones and blinking lights tells the technicians what is going on with thelaptop and why it is not booting. Most times it's a motherboard issuewhen you hear beeps or blinking lights continuous. Most times the problemis with the memory or Video Card. Count the Blinking Lights or Beeps and takenote of their pattern (1 Long or 1 Long followed by 2 Short).

Maybe your power cord is bad if you don't get anything to happen whatsoeverwhen you press the power button. And if that's true maybe you wasoperating off the battery the last time you had it on and since the power cordis bad, it was not charging the battery so the battery is drained and the powercord is bad.

Maybe you have a Static Charge Buildup. Remove the Power Cord, Remove theBattery, then Press and Hold the power button for 30seconds. After 30 seconds plug the power cord back in (leave the batteryout) and hit the power button to see if it boots. If it does, you can putthe battery back in and let it charge.Maybe your DC Power Jack which is where the power cord plugsinto the computer is bad. Take an ink pen and push the tip inside thejack and see if the little pin wiggles, if so the jack is bad. You'll have totake the laptop apart to fix it. Most times it is soldered onto themotherboard, so you will have to desolder the old and solder a new one.Maybe your memory is bad or the memory slot is bad.Remove the Power Cord, Open the Case and remove one of thememory chips. Set the chip aside then try rebooting the computer. If it boots, then you know the memory chip you set aside is bad so mark an x onit with an ink pen. If it fails to boot then move the chip to the nextmemory slot and try rebooting. If it fails take the chip out and set itaside, then put the other chip in and try booting it in both slots. If itboots, just to verify that the chip set aside is bad, mark an x on it and putit into the open memory chip slot and try booting.

Restore default settings for ibm thinkpad r50

Hi, During the boot at the THINKPAD SCREEN press the Thinkvantage key ( Blue button ) it will launch rescue and recovery and allow you to reboot factory. This only works if you did not corrupted/deleted the rescue and recovery hidden partition on the HDD. Otherwise you will need the rescue and recovery CD to proceed. IBM/Lenovo support should be able to provide you the CD. thanks and have a nice day J-

When stat thinkpad R50 beeps 2x and nothing

Two short beeps and no further activity mean you could have a motherboard problem or a memory (RAM) problem.
Reseat the RAM modules and reboot the laptop, if the laptop still doesn't work, remove the RAM module/s and insert them into a working laptop to test them, or take them to you friendly computer shop to have them tested.
If the RAM is OK then the fault is the motherboard. Replacing the motherboard may not be a cost effective solution.

T23 Thinkpad turns off during boot after restart

My guess would be ;-
A power supply problem with the battery and/or power adapter
The most likely one.
The CPU is overheating and shutting down and if you wait a while and it will power it up again, it will then run for a while and shut down again.
This can be caused by a faulty fan (its not spinning and needs to be replaced) or the vents are clogged with dust (needs to be cleaned and you may need to remove the fan assembly to do this).
