Question about Haier HWS08XC1 8,000 BTU Window Air Conditioner
I called haier about this error code. E1 indicates that a button on the control panel or the reomote is stuck. I was instructed to unplug the unit and push each button at least 5 times, one at a time. Plug the unit back in, and this fixed my problem with error E1 and the unit works fine.

I have a voltas veritas AC. I was getting the same error E1 on display on power ON. Reason was malfunctioning of sensor.
Simply replace the sensor and it will work fine.

Last month my error E1 came on my air conditioning unit. It turns out that there was a huge malfunction in the system and it was sensing that. It wasn't worth my time and so I decided to just get a new system and the new installation is working great. I know that normally you don't just go out and buy a new system, but mine was getting fairly old. How old is your system? Air Conditioning Installation Repair near Lakewood CA

Found this on Samsungs site.Hope it helps a little, at least you know the problem now. If your air conditioner displays E1 in the display panel and won't turn on, it means that the Room Thermistor (a device connected to the thermostat that detects room temperature) is shorted or defective, and you need to have your air conditioner serviced. If it displays E2, E3, or any other E error, you also need to have your air conditioner serviced. To arrange for service, contact Samsung Customer Care at 1-800-Samsung (1-800-726-7864). Have the model number of your air conditioner on hand when you call.

The Sharp e1 problem is a timer that is pretending to demand that you clean the filter. It stops the machine every 720 hours and forces you to do a procedure to get it to go away.
There are 2 possible procedures.
1) Unplug the machine. Hold down the power button while you plug the machine in and wait for a beep about 5 seconds long. Let go of the power button. Unplug the machine. Plug it back in.
2) Unplug the machine. Hold down the mode button while plugging the machine back in and waiting for a beep of about 3 seconds duration. Let go of the mode button. The machine will start. Turn the machine off by pressing the power button. Resume trying to use the machine normally.
If these don't work, the "demand to clean filter" timer is broken and you will need to buy parts to repair the machine.
(Don't you just love having a computer chip in every appliance?)
