I purchased a DVD that states: Widescreen Format (Aspect Ratio 1.85.1) I'm unable to get 'widescreen/letterbox'. The movie shows up full screen or a 'stretched' view. All other movies I've...

On the DVD recorder remote: press function menu button: enter setup screen - scroll down to connection - TV aspect - select either 16:9 / 4:3 Letterbox / 4:3 Pan&scan. If you are using an older TV which is not a widescreen, set the aspect to '4:3 Letterbox'.

You should now be able to view your DVD movies from this machine through a 4:3 standard TV in letterbox format. (some DVDs do not allow pan&scan so letterbox or widescreen is recommended). Very rare that a DVD title is not compatible with 4:3 TVs. I assume your deck is set to output 16:9 aspect by default.

I find this is the cheapest and easiest solution and can save lots of dollars in service call-outs. You can always reset the unit back to shipping condition later if you need to, or in the rare case of digital channels disappearing from your tuner memory.

Cannot get full picture on the screen

Hi Mic,

Can't get full picture ?
If this is for running a dvd if it is not a
full screen version of the dvd then you
will not get it.
If it is widescreen addition you will get the
black bars at the top and bottom.

If you can't get full screen in normal mode a
few things could cause this.
One if your running from your "say" direct tv box.
You will need to try your Format button...second
button on the left of the remote.
Second you could try the restore settings on your
tv, it will restore the settings to the manufacturer's
original settings.
Keep in mind that not all tv channels are full screen.
Example: If I watch nfl gameday in HD it is full screen.
If I select the same program but, not in HD the screen
is smaller. thing it goes to a 4:3 aspect ration..
Switch back to HD and it's full screen again.

hope this helps some.

Why my regular dvd player with widescreen movies does not fill my hd tv ?

ok, There are 2 aspect ratio's for tv/movies. Widescreen Standard
If you have a Widescreen TV, Widescreen formatted dvd's will fill the hole screen, Standard formatted dvd's will not fill the whole screen
if you have a Standard TV, Standard formatted dvd's will fill the whole screen, Widescreen formatted dvd's will not fill the whole screen
this is normal, check to see the format of the dvd you are trying to use.

The picture is crunched like if you were watching a letterbox movie.(with the black at the top an bottom of the screen how do i correct this

Black on top of bottom is widescreen.. Some dvd's are made in only widescreen. Usually you have to buy a full screen disc to cover the entire screen or change to format to 16:9 or 6:9 or whatever it handles/

You may see the black on top and bottom, it is annoying at first, but the picture is so much wider and you can actually see more on a widescreen

Sanyo HT30744 Aspect Ratio Help

Do you still have the original remote? If so there is a button that says "Pix shape" that will change your aspect ratio for you. If you are watching something in HD it should say "full". If it is analog it will say "normal" in 4x3 format. If you want it stretch hit it till it says "zoom 1" or "zoom 2". If you don't have the original remote I am not sure how you would change it. You can find them on ebay if you need one. Hope this helps.

4.14.1 Understanding Viewing Features
Your LCD HDTV features four viewing modes and Picture-In-Picture (PIP)/Picture-by-Picture (POP) mode.
You can switch viewing modes using the remote control.
4.14.2 Viewing Modes
Normal Mode
The original 4:3 aspect ratio (1.33:1 source) is preserved, so black bars are
added to the left and right of the display image. Standard TV broadcasts are
displayed with a 4:3 Aspect Ratio. Movies in 4:3 Aspect Ratio may be referred
to as pan-and-scan or full frame. These movies were originally filmed in 16:9
(widescreen), and then modified to fit a traditional TV screen (4:3).
Wide Mode
When watching a standard broadcast or full-frame movie in this mode,
the display image is stretched proportionately to fill the TV screen.
When watching a widescreen (1.78:1 source) program or movie, the
display image fills the TV screen. If you are watching a widescreen
(1.85:1 or 2.35:1 source) program or movie, there will still be black
bars at the top and bottom.
Zoom Mode
When watching a widescreen (1.78:1, 1.85:1, or 2.35:1 source)
program or movie, the display image is zoomed proportionally to fill the
width of the screen. The top and bottom are cut off to remove most of
the source material’s black bars. This mode is good for programs or
movies with sub-titles.
Panoramic Mode
When watching a standard broadcast or full frame movie in this mode,
the 4:3 Aspect Ratio (1.33:1 source) display image is stretched
horizontally on the left and right sides to fill the TV screen. The center
of the image is not stretched.

Note: Viewing modes are saved based on input. For example, you lasted watched a DVD in widescreen
mode and then watched TV in standard mode. When you switch back to DVD input, the viewing mode
will return to widescreen.

How do I set the DVD picture to Full Screen as opposed to Wide Screen?

That is the way the DVD makers intended it to be. The TV cannot be adjusted to change that if it is a widescreen or "letterbox" movie.

Playing back widescreen problem

The TV itself uses the CTC203 chassis and is not capable of switching between normal and widescreen. This is an issue with your DVD player and not a problem with the TV.
