Thanks for your assistance .... Here's further detail since trying your help.
Perhaps I should point out that I use the printer through my D-Link DI-624 router (wired) .... whilst my Toshiba Laptop communicates to the router wirelessly.
I do sometimes use a USB cable coupled directly between Printer and Computer .... I also used that to investigate what might happen.
The "resetting" proceedure didn't work using either coupling method. The same thing happened, and it seems IMPORTANT to note that after doing "the test" .... the last Window locked up and had to be closed using the TaskBar Manager. I could click on other tabs and get a representation of the contents. I didn't follow those experiments at all. It seemed to be more important to get Windows back to a stable condition.
Incidentally, I can still print a bad collection of miscoloured pictures.

I have been looking (in some depth) at the folders (Start/All Programs) .... followed by the "Proper" Folders for further information .... this was as a result of reading my *printed* Reference Guide for the printer. That suggested that there was a "User Guide" .... but, that file did not exist!!.
It is a pity that this editing area does not contain the facility to add screen capture detail .... that would explain things in a much simpler way. I use screen capture regularly. ((and have prepared some for this content))

I have looked inside the "Program Files" of HP .... where I can see 165MB of detail which I don't really understand .... but, I am willing to look at any detail that you may suggest.

    Thanks again
    Kind Regards

Pity I can't use the Print Screen Capture facility that was available in the first "email".

I went for the HP 6980 download (very big at 251.63MB .... that was a surprise.)

I had to download it 3 times. Trying to do something with it caused an unresponsive Window which had to be closed with Task Manager.

Eventually (more by accident !!!), I got a small Window which suggested waiting until a preliminary condition was set up (??)
A larger Window eventually "arrived", with options that didn't suggest anything about a new (or replacement) driver.

I tried some of the "options" when I also had the opportunity to go back .... which I did.

One of the options appeared to suggest a driver situation .... so I followed that one .... Accompanied by not clear instructions and no feed back to me.

The last Window showed a 96% completion situation with a varing download speed (I think) of about 15KB/sec.

There was no other response .... and that window just "vanished" after about 20 minutes.

I waited another 30 minutes .... Then, I tried to use the printer to do something. It was capable of printing more BAD pictures.
The services Window would open but trying to activate the services failed with the usual warning that the services were not available.
However, that warning Window could be "checked out" and repeatedly "activated"
That Window did not go "unresponsive" this time, .... and the printing program could be closed normally.

    Regards

I am surprised that you can add a response BEFORE you can have possibly read my comments and realised the consequences of what I have said.

    Surprised,

As I have explained above, I have been to that site and downloaded and "installed it" .... with the effect that I have described.
I have since found the original installation CD, and I'm wondering what is the "proper way" to proceed using it.
Should I uninstall the original setup .... or what.
Should I be using "Device Manager" to remove and replace printer drivers ?

    Regards

sorry. dint see roboteks comments. both were same.

but as far as i can feel there is nothing that can be done unless your printer responds to the signals from the computer.

so if you are not successful in making the printer respond you cant do anything by yourself. that can be due to some faulty circuits.

My Epson Stylus R300 will not print black

The problem is either with the black cartridge or with black printheads.

First test a new black cartridge, possibly original, to ensure it is not the cartridge.
Perform a print head cleaning procedure using the printer tools in Winsdows, do this a couple of times.
If it did not work you will need to replace the print head or to take the printer to a repair shop.

Why do my pictures look faded with up and down stripes?

Check the paper to make sure you are using the correct paper type for the project. If the paper is too fibrous, the ink applied by the printer might not fully cover the print surface.
  1. In the program being used for printing, click File , and then click Pring . The Print window opens.
  2. Make sure the appropriate product is selected, and then click Preferences or Properties . The Preferences/Properties window opens.
  3. Click the Printing Shortcuts tab. Consider modifying some or all of the options in the Printing Shortcuts menu to increase print quality.
    • Print quality : If the quality of the printouts is not acceptable, try increasing the print quality. To print more quickly, try decreasing the print quality.
    • Paper type : If one of the options matches the paper type exactly, select it instead of Automatic .
    • Paper size : Make sure that this option matches the paper loaded in the product.
To see additional options, click the The Advanced Features window opens. Consider changing the following option: Ink volume : Adjust the amount of ink that prints on a page. For lighter images (less ink), drag the slider to the left. For darker images (more ink), drag the slider to the right. The lighter the ink volume, the more quickly the printout dries.
Press and hold the asterisk (* ) and pound (# ) buttons on the product control panel.
  1. When the control panel reads *******#######, release the asterisk (* ) and pound (# ) buttons.
  2. Press the 3 , 2 , and 9 buttons, in that order.
  3. Press the right arrow button (c00420524.gif ) to select Special Reports , and then press OK .
  4. Press the right arrow button (c00420524.gif ) to select Print Cartridges , and then press OK

Can i print with epson dx 4000 using only black ink i have run out of magenta can i alter my printer just to use black

Yes in the properties menu or setup of your printer you can look out for one word grayscale just click on that and you can deffinetly take a print out of anything in black and white. When you press ctrl plus P you can directly go for properties or option just browse for few minutes you will deffinetly find your grayscale option just check it and take your printouts.

My 8x10 photos have half a blue tint and half a yellow tint. I cleaned the heads and aligned the print cartridges and that didn't make a difference. Working with a HP2610. Thanks! Leslie

Step 1 - Check the ink levels
  1. Open the Printer Toolbox . There are two ways to do this:Open HP Director , select the Settings menu, then the Print Settings submenu, and finally the Printer Toolbox
    • Open Printers and Faxes in the Windows Control Panel , then right-click your printer icon and choose Properties . Click Printing Preferences . Click the Services tab, then the Service This Device icon. The Printer Toolbox opens. Click the Estimated Ink Level tab. A cartridge may be running out of ink even if the graphic shows ink remaining (see the note at the start of this section). Lines or streaks always appear in printouts when the cartridges begin to run out of ink. Replace print cartridges that are out of ink or low on ink. Step 2 - Check the printer settings
      1. In the program being used for printing, click File , and then click Print The Print window opens.Make sure the appropriate product is selected, and then click Preferences or Properties .The Preferences/Properties window opens.Click the Printing Shortcuts tab.
      2. For darker images (more ink), drag the slider to the right. The lighter the ink volume, the more quickly the printout dries.
Step 3 - Run the clean print cartridges utility
      1. Press the Setup button.Use the arrow keys to select Tools and then press the OK button.Select Clean Print Cartridge and then press OK . The device prints a test page.Examine the test page. If the print quality of the page is good, stop here. If the print quality is bad, go on to the next step for further cleaning.Open the Printer Toolbox . There are two ways to do this:
        • Open HP Director , select the Settings menu, then the Print Settings submenu, and finally the Printer Toolbox .
        • If the HP Director method does not work, open Printers and Faxes in the Windows Control Panel , then right-click your printer icon and choose Properties . Click on Printing Preferences . Click the Services tab, then the Service This Device icon.
      2. The Printer Toolbox opens. On the Device Services tab, click Clean the Print Cartridges , then follow the on-screen instructions. Up to three levels of cleaning are available. Discard or recycle the page that prints.

All of a sudden it printed very faded, a light blue color. I changed the black ink cart and it still does the same. I only have a folder on my desktop with the HP manuel, etc. help I can't get into a menu...

Is your ink old? Replace your ink cartridges if they are.

To access your printers menus, go into the Control Panel and click on Printers. Right click and chose Properties. On the General tab, click Printing Preferences. The click the Services tab. Here you can clean your print cartidges or calibrate your device, if necessary.

Photosmart C6300 pictures are printing very wet and grainy. printer is also very loud - almost as though the parts were scraping and banging.

Sounds like you have the wrong paper setting in your print properties. I would use photo or high bright 24lb paper and set the paper type in your printer properties prior to executing the print job.
