Clanking noise when spinning during rinse cycle

Even though the washer is spinning super fast, the clanking is about 1 second apart. It's not out of balance as when I open it the drum is spinning normally without any wobble... but when I stop the cycle I can move the drum with my hand. Also, I have to keep the water level between med. and high (has Extra High level) because during rinse or spin it leaks if higher than that. The machine is about 6 years old, until this it hasn't given us any problems. We also just moved over 300 miles away and maybe something got loose during the move? Thanks for any help you can give me.

My washer was making noise during spin cycles as described above (clanking noise) and now is leaking from bottom. What can I do to see what is wrong. Is this a sign of needing a new washer , I am not mechanically inclined. So I need an easy resolve. Thanks. It is an older machine LWD 70 AW model .

Hi MJG1 and dmonti7 you both have the same problem.Welcome to fixya.
I'm Huuum,

The coupling that connects the transmission to the drum is worn like a drive shaft of an old rear wheel drive car and will eventually break and not work at all.
There are to choices,
Fix it or replace it if it is that old!
I just read an interesting report .
Here it is!

Repair or replace?

When to pull the plug on your old refrigerator

It nearly always makes sense to undertake simple do-it-yourself repairs,
such as replacing a gasket on a refrigerator or a freezer.

Typically, you'll also find a troubleshooting section for more-serious problems
in the owner's manual.

Should you pay for a repair or buy a new model?
The answer depends mostly on the age of your refrigerator,
how much you bought it for,and the cost of the repair.

Follow these guidelines:

When a repair makes sense.

If your refrigerator is under warranty or less than four years old (three years for top-freezers),
paying for a repair makes sense.
Note that refrigerators under warranty might require service from a factory-authorized technician;
readers have found them on a par with independent repairers.

When a repair might be a wise choice.

If your refrigerator is out of warranty and is four to seven years old,
it might make sense to pay for a repair. Customers generally pay $100 to $200 for a repair.
But you might want to buy a new model even at this stage,
given that today's models are quieter and have added features.
Higher energy efficiency is another plus: Energy Star-qualified models made after April 28, 2008,
are 43 percent more efficient than conventional models built before 2001 and 56 percent
more efficient than those built before 1993.

When it pays to replace.

The repair costs more than half the price of a comparable new refrigerator.
Data also shows that it doesn't pay to fix a less-expensive top-freezer refrigerator
six or more years old or a bottom-freezer or side-by-side eight or more years old.

Thanks to better recycling programs, less than 10 percent
of a refrigerator you replace is likely to end up in a landfill.

Thanks for giving me the opportunity to help!
Please do not for get to give a rating before you sign off!
Thank You, HUUUM

Loud clanking noise during spin cycle. Will not

If it is a front loader, then remove the rear panel, remove the belt, and soin drum by hand, if it feels rough, or is noisy and rumbling, then the main drum bearings have failed.
This is a major repair.

This washer is JUNK!!!!!! We have the same washer (2 1/2 years old) and same problem. Tried to replace the bearing myself, no luck. So I called a repair man to come out and look at it. As soon as i told him the model number, they would'nt even come out. Very common problem for this washer. We are on our way to Sears to purchase a Kenmore.....GOOD LUCK

Clanking, sparking sound coming from washer

Need to know a little more info. Need to know if this noise starts when you first turn it on (during the fill up cycle), once the actual washer starts (wash cycle) or when it goes into spin cycle.

Clanking noise during spin cycle

I was told by 3 technicians that my washer had shot bearings and this is a common problem for the Kenmore Elite Front loader.

Sears knows it and will not do anything about it except try to sell you a new washer since it costs $800 to replace the unit with the bearings.
