I'm assuming you are using windows...

You need to close anything that has files open from the hard drive. Even having a Windows Explorer window or "My Computer" window open will cause the drive to be in use. Close these and you should be able to use the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon in the system tray.

Test this out on another computer to see if it does the same thing. If that doesn't work, then send the drive in to Hitachi under warranty because it is failing.

Once my game is loaded into tray the screen comes up and tells me to open back up and close again. This occurs all the time not just with one game. Any suggestions???

Yes. First when the tray is opened watch the green light . It should
blink then stay on steady.
When the tray is closesing you should see a blinking
green light in the center of the ring of lights .When the tray
is fully closed and engaged the light will stop blinking then you
should hear the drive spin-up. If not open the tray then close
it ,just as the tray is almost closed push it close hard then the
green flashing light should be steady on.

This is cause mostly by friction in the drive or a bent
leaf switch that the tray engages to tell the console
the state of the tray .

The remedy is either you or a shop
will need to open the drive and remove the frictions
points which very from drive to drive. and check the
leaf switches . cost 40.00 or so . or you could
simply buy a "new" drive on ebay and swap the
Drives P.C. board from the old drive to the new one
price 40.00 but you supply the labor.

I gave you more info than you need but this is
common problem and I hope it will help others also

I have a maxtor 5000LE the device shows under

Could be that the control board inside the device is going bad. Have you tried other cables to connect to your computer?
If that fails, then I'd suggest removing the drive from it's enclosure and using an adapter to connect the drive directly to your PC as an external device. I found one on eBay, years ago, for about $13USD.

Removing portable hard drive!

In the bottom right hand corner of the screen, there will be an icon with a green arrow (pointing to the left), and when you mouse over it, it will say "safely remove hardware" left click on it and you should get some options that say things like "safely remove USB mass storage device - drive (f:, c:)" find the one that is your device, and click on it... now the device is safe to unplug from the usb!

Pover up trouble

sounds like something is drawing down on your 12 volt supply drives or on board regulators. Try it without the drives connectged, and see if you can get the system to boot up(you'll just get a notice that your drives are unavailable, but you'll already know that, right?
