Hi,

The most common reason for this message is when a dial-up modem is accessing the Internet on the same phone line. Just as two phone calls cannot come in at the same time, two devices cannot use the phone line at the same time.

f a broadband modem (such as DSL or ISDN) is on the same phone line and the message appears all the time, please contact your Internet provider for assistance. Even if a dial tone is present when listening to the phone line, the HP product may detect the broadband data connection at the higher line frequencies. Broadband modems must have a line filter installed to work correctly. Contact the telephone company for assistance. Please follow the directions below to verify functionality.

  1. Verify that the phone cable going into the HP fax product from the wall jack is a two-conductor cable type, not four-conductor. A two-conductor cable, like the one that ships with the HP product, has two copper leads in the connector. The connectors are usually clear, making it possible to see how many copper leads are inside the cable. Replace a four-conductor cable with a two-conductor cable.
  2. Disconnect the phone cable from the back of the HP product and the message should clear. If the message does not clear, unplug the power cable from the back of the unit, wait 15 seconds, and then plug in the power cable. If the message persists, see the "Problem still exists" section below.
  3. Disconnect the phone cable from the HP product and connect it to a single line phone. Pick up the handset and listen for a dial tone. If no dial tone is present, replace the phone cable. If a dial tone is still not present, a problem exists with the phone system. Continue with the steps below if a dial tone is present.
  4. Plug the phone cable back into the HP product and hang up any phones with a lifted handset.
  5. Disconnect, one at a time, other phones and devices using the same phone line. Check the HP product display after disconnecting each phone or device. If the message clears after disconnecting a phone or device from the line, the problem is with that phone or device.
  6. If the message still exists after unplugging all other phones or devices, see the "Problem still exists" section below.

My HP 7780 always says phone off hook. When I disconnect the phone line for awhile and reinstall it faxes once properly then the phone off hook message reappears.

I use a VOIP line and get the same error msg. Here's what I do- I dial the fax number with the line unplugged (hence no off-hook message), press "start Fax", and as soon as I hear the fax machine "Click" to pickup the line, I put the line in the machine. Works every time!

Phone off hook message

A "Phone Off Hook" message is not an error. It simply indicates that a telephone receiver is off the hook (the handset is lifted) and the telephone line is open. This message would be expected in the following situations:
  • A modem on the phone line is accessing the Internet.
  • A phone connected to the HP fax (or the same phone line) is using the line, or the handset has been lifted.
  • A credit card machine is using the phone line.
  • Another electronic device is using the phone line.
  • The Start Fax button was pressed with no telephone number entered. Pressing Stop or Cancel should return the display to a ready state.
When the other device is no longer using the phone line, the display should revert to the normal message. Checking the phone line The most common reason for this message is when a dial-up modem is accessing the Internet on the same phone line. Just as two phone calls cannot come in at the same time, two devices cannot use the phone line at the same time. If a broadband modem (such as DSL or ISDN) is on the same phone line and the message appears all the time, please contact your Internet provider for assistance. 3. Disconnect the phone cable from the HP product and connect it to a single line phone. Pick up the handset and listen for a dial tone. If no dial tone is present, replace the phone cable.
Problem still exists If the problem still exists after performing the steps above, the line interface unit (LIU), the part that the phone line plugs into, may be defective or the HP product may need to be serviced.

My fax wont work in my ricoh aficio 1515 mf??

Using the 1515 as a fax machine is a pretty simple procedure if everything works right. All you have to do is hook a working phone line up to the phone jack on the back of the copier (the one labeled LINE, not TEL).

Why won't the fax work? If it is giving you an error message, what is the message?

If you are not getting a dial tone when faxing, unplug the fax from the phone line and plug a working phone in, and see if the phone gets a dial tone. If it doesn't, there is a problem with your phone line.

You can also try plugging the fax machine into another phone line. If the fax works on that line, then there may be a problem with the first line.

Are you having problems sending faxes or receiving them, or both?

Can I use as phone/answering machine and fax

no, this machine does not have a message center. the only way is to hook an actual answering machine up to the "ext" jack on your fax. set fax to answer on 1-2 rings, and set your answering machine to answer on at least 4 rings, and set your fax receive mode to "tad" which means telephone answering device.

Fax machine shows message "external phone". Machine is a Philips Magic 3 primo

The message means that a telephone connected to the machine is off hook. Either that or the internal relay that seizes the line after a phone is used has hung up. In that case, try removing the power to the machine and unplugging the line and any other phone cords connected to the machine. Then 1st plugging in the power cord and wait until the machine powers up. If the error code doesn't appear, then plug in the line cord.

6210 all in one printer

Phone off hook means to say that the printer is connected to a fax line and the fax line is in use. That message won't disappear until you disconnect the phone cable on the printer or no one is using the line for fax.

Will not fax

It is a default message when you are calling from the same phone as your fax machine.
If yourAll-In-One is sharing a phone line with your telephone, modem, or another device, and if any of the other devices is using the line, you will see the "Phone off hook" message on the All-In-One front panel. You can still print, copy, and scan with the All-In-One when you see this message, but you cannot send or receive faxes. To clear the message, check each device to make sure that it is no longer using the line.
