You can format in the camera. usually you go to the menu on your camera and select tools or utilities, select format.

Your memory card will be erased.

If you are using a memory card, take no more pics until you've recovered the photos, take the card out of the camera. This is to reduce the chance of you overwriting some of your "lost" photos. There are many good freeware photo recovery software options that are available to help you recover your photos. This blog article reviews and outlines several of the better ones.

I have a ton of pix on my memory card, when I insert it into my printer to copy the photos to my computer it says I have to Format the Card - if I do that won't it erase every photo?!?!? thanks

Yes, formatting it will completely erase it. Why are you plugging it into your printer? The best way to download is to use a separate card reader that plugs into a USB port. This one is only $13 at Walmart. 14ff48d.jpg

The likely reason this keeps happening is that these cards weren't formatted in the camera when you first got them. However, don't do so just yet as formatting also erases the card. Now AFTER you've recovered the photos, format the cards IN THE CAMERA USING THE CAMERAS FORMAT FEATURE. Look for it, it's located under the "tools" menu (look for the item stating the card's memory capacity). This should rejuvenate both cards, and prevent reoccurrence.

Having pics on both the internal memory and a memory card is asking for trouble. Take out the card and download the internal memory to your computer. Then, go into the menu and find "format" and erase the internal memory. Then, download all the pics from the memory card using a separate card reader. Then, insert the card into the camera and do the format thing again to erase and optimize the card. Now you have a fresh start...never use the internal memory again.

Hi, i accidently opened the battery door cover with the camera still on and now it says "memory card error" and won't take any more pix. how do i fix the problem? thanks

Hello. Turn the camera on and go to the menu. Find reset and reset your camera. This will take you back to the original factory settings. Next you may have to format your memory card. once again go to your menu and find format. Formatting will erase what you have on that card, so if you do not want to lose those pix save them to your computer first. Joe

If you connected the camera to the computer with a USB cord to download your pics and then just yanked out the cord without using the "safely remove hardware" icon at the bottom right corner of your screen, the card may have been corrupted. Replace it.

Internal memory is full - memory card inserted not taking

Sounds like the memory card is full so when you go to auto, the camera will go to internal memory as opposed to memory card.

You can transfer all of the pix from your memory card to your computer and then erase the memory card and you will be fine.
