Question about Goodman CLJ30AR32 Air Conditioner

1 Answer

Freon leaking my unit is only 4 yrs old. in the winter it was not working, he put 2# of freon, said that the sequensers needed replaced. Then they came back when summer hit and put in 7# of freon, did not check for leak, and now are saying that they have to come back and empty freon to find the leak, they should have done that when it was almost empty, not just add freon. which was 140.00

First, you need to complain to the owner about the tech not informing you that the freon would leak out again. It's addtional costs that were not explained to you. If he's a good guy, he may credit you something if you decide to use him to complete the repair. Otherwise, take your money to someone else. And be sure to tell you friends about how you were treated. Vote with your wallet.
Now, He was not totally correct about finding the leak. In 99% of cases, when a leak is in a system, a detector is used to "Smell" the freon and give a signal that there is a leak So, in this case, freon needs to be in the system. Once the leak is found and verified, there can be no freon present in the section of the system that is being repaired. To keep it short, just a big safety no-no. If the leak is in the indoor coil (evap), chances are, they will not repair it. They will try to sell you a new coil. Since yours is only 4 years old, there is the possibility that there may be some sort of pro-rated warranty from the manufacturer. One never knows, ask about it.
Now, repairing an indoor coil is not a good idea. If it leaks once, it's going to leak again.....and again.....and again. Just replace it as they have to do basically everything it takes to remove it to repair it. You should replace it since it is already out. I do not know of any company that will patch leaking evaps. Just bad business. Customers not happy as other leaks soon show up.
Finally, removing all the freon may not be necessary. Ask him about "Pumping down the system into the condensing unit". This can isolate the entire indoor coil and piping so a repair can be done with minimal lose of freon. Remember, it also depends where the leak is at. It may not be possible to do this in every case.

Good luck and hope this clears up some things for you.

No Freon doesnt evaporate the only way you have to charge an A/C unit is if it has a leak somewhere in the system. It sounds like your compressor is locked up I would try installing a super boost to the Condenser (outside unit). Let me know

My 6 yrs. old window ac is not cooling well after service some body says there is a problem with capacter or some says there will be gas leakage pls. advice

Hello
If its not cooling good you may have lost some freon due to a leak. You will need to have the unit leaked checked and refilled.

If you do not feel or hear the fans running then you may have a bad fan motor, which will need to be replaced.

Why would you be paying for refrigerant on a 4 year old system when most systems have a 5 year warranty on sealed systems.
Sounds like who ever it is servicing is ripping you off.

Hello
If your going to have all the freon taken out, this current tech needs to find the leak.

Clearly from what you have said the unit has a freon leak.Freon is put in by ounces or pounds depending on the size of the unit, then you need to get the correct operating pressures.Coils do not go bad they either get full of dirt or get a hole in them.

An 8 yr old unit is a tough call, surley a new one will probably save some electric and come with a warranty.I would get some quotes on a new one, then see how much i could spend.

2 month long issue...RUUD Achiever 1.5 Ton 10 Seer Heat Pump

Rather than have him replace the control board first, ask him to remove all the freon and weigh it. He then can reuse the Freon that came out of your system put back in at the exact charge that the rating plate calls for. He will add a bit more to compensate for any length of refrigerant lines from the outside unit to the inside unit. Now this will bring us to factory specs. If the unit continues to act up, then try another board. I am not a big fan of replacing parts unless other alternative ways have been tried. If he is not willing to try what you ask, why is he there? As far as if something is taking out the control board, have him clean and reconnect all ground connections and inspect the thermostat connections both on the inside unit and the outside unit. Is lightning a factor in your area?

Freon has to be added for the 3rd year now in unit only 2 yrs 8 mos old. Installer cannot find leak in condenser or inside unit. What could be problem?

installer has no patients. leaks are hard to find if they are small. some times you must use soap and water to find small leaks bubbles will show quicker. or pull charge from unit and charge with nitrogen to a higher pressure and low side of unit may be where leak is coils can be a major problem for so many tubes to trace but time and patients is the answer. leak detectors that are used are great for larger leaks but if the detector isn't kept calibrated this go wrong, thats why i'll go to the old method of soap and bubbles

You need to have a pressure gauge the reads for R-22. (Freon) It sounds like the system might have a leak. Look for a wet place any place on the units pipe system. It has a little oil in with the freon that is forced out of any leak. If you see a wet place this is oil. It is also the location of your leak.

Compressor freezes up at night and some during day.

You are being ripped off. The ambient (outdoor) temperature at night is low and therefore proper condensing does not take place causing the refrigerant to pool in the condenser and starving the evaporator. This causes a lower temperature in the evaporator resulting in "freeze up" which is often mistaken for a loss of refrigerant.
The proper thing to be done is to block off the condenser air causing the high side pressure to rise until the eqivillant of 110*F condensing temperature.
You can also install a low ambient kit which will cycle the compressor off when the temperatures fall

Coil leaking freon on the inside unit. Estimate is $2,100!

If indeed your evaporator (indoor) coil is leaking, the best option IS replace it (it may not even BE repairable). If you live in the USA and your furnace is getting old, a new ultra high efficient SYSTEM that qualifies for the tax credit would probably be a better option (Obama will pay 30%).

AC WON'T COOL

Sounds like you have a freon leak or your compressor has stopped working. You will probably need a service tech. If it is out of freon, don't let them just add more freon, make them find and repair the leak first. Good Luck.
