Try clearing your BIOS/CMOS settings by taking out and putting back in your CMOS battery. It should be located under one of the removable panels underneath your laptop. Search Google for a more in-depth guide. I've also attached a picture of what a CMOS battery looks like in case your wondering. Nevermind that yellow rectangle, the battery is that round silver looking thing.

HI............
Reset IBM ThinkPad Password
An IBM ThinkPad laptop can have three hardware password sets:
  • Power-On Password
  • Hard Disk Password
  • Supervisor Password
Power-On Password RT/CMOS RAM has 8 bytes reserved for the power-on password and the check character. The 8 bytes are initialized to hex 00. The microprocessor can access these bytes only during POST. After POST is completed, if a power-on password is installed, the password bytes are locked and no program can access them.
During power-on password installation, the password (1 to 7 characters) is stored in the security space.
Installing the password is a function of the built-in system program Easy-Setup. The power-on password does not appear on the screen when it is installed, changed, or removed. After the power-on password has been installed, it can be changed or removed only during POST.
Hard Disk Password The hard-disk password (HDP) prevents unauthorized persons from accessing the data on the removable hard disk drive.
Supervisor Password The supervisor password prevents unauthorized persons from changing the system information in Easy-Setup.

How to Reset an IBM ThinkPad Power On Password Using Hardware If the ThinkPad cannot be booted, reset the IBM ThinkPad password via hardware.
If only the power-on password is set, do the following to remove the power-on password.
  1. Power off the computer
  2. Remove the DIMM cover on the bottom side of the computer.
  3. Short circuit the two password pads or put a jumper on the contacts to short the circuit.
  4. Under the short circuit condition, power on the computer and wait until the POST ends. After the POST ends, the password prompt does not appear. The power-on password is removed.
  5. Reinstall the DIMM cover.
If both the power-on password and the supervisor password are set, do the following to remove the passwords:
  1. Press and hold F1 to power on the computer.
  2. Enter the supervisor password. The Easy-Setup menu appears.
  3. Click the Password icon.
  4. Click the Power on icon.
  5. Enter the supervisor password and press the Space bar.
  6. Press Enter twice.

Does this laptop belong to you or you purchased it? If so you need to contact that person for the password or ask for a refund.

This ThinkPad laptop has a Power on Password. This password is enabled to prevent unauthorized access to this laptop.
This password is configured from the BIOS and is stored on an EEPROM chip (ATMEL 24RF08) and removing the BIOS battery to reset the BIOS to the factory defaults will not remove this password.

There are no backdoor passwords available. IBM state the fix is a replacement motherboard.

You have an Power on Password.
The Power on Password is set up from the BIOS configuration and the password is stored on an EEPROM chip. Removing the BIOS battery will not reset the BIOS password, there are no backdoor password available.
There is a way to retrieve the password, but it requires a bit of electronic skill and a working computer to achieve this.

ThinkPad G40 is locked up

Oops, straight from the manual for your laptop...

Problem: I forgot my password.
Solution: If you forgot your power-on password, you must take your computer to an IBM reseller or marketing representative to have the password canceled. If you forgot your hard disk password, IBM will not reset your password or recover data from the hard disk. You must take your computer to an IBM reseller or an IBM marketing representative to have the hard disk drive
replaced. Proof of purchase is required, and a fee will be charged for parts and service. If you forgot your supervisor password, IBM will not reset your password. You must take your computer to an IBM reseller or IBM marketing representative to have the system board replaced. Proof of purchase is required, and a fee will be charged for parts and service.

Sorry to see that... Good luck.

This works great
Forgotten Power-on password
If the Power-on password is forgotten
and the Supervisor password is known,
simply go into the ThinkPad BIOS setup
utility and reset the Power-on password,
otherwise try the following:
Turn off the computer.
Remove the battery pack.
Remove the backup battery. This is
located under the battery.
Turn on the computer and wait until the
POST ends. After the POST ends, the
password prompt does not appear. The POP
has been removed.
Reinstall the backup battery and the
battery pack.
Note: Some ThinkPad systems have the
ability to reset the Power-on passwords
in the ThinkPad BIOS setup utility if a
Supervisor password has been set.
