Question about Insignia 37" LCD Flat-Panel HDTV

1 Answer

Picture is cut off

The resolution on my tv is too large. the top and bottom are cut off. I have tried the normal settings (cinema, wide etc) but that doesn't make it small enough.

my new 32" 720p insignia flat screen either cuts off the top or bottom of the image, or shows these obnoxious gray sidebars. I am looking for the best settings for both the cable box (I have a scientific atlanta explorer 8300hd cable box from time warner) and the television.

The picture is cut off, there's gray sidebars except for when i have it in cinema but then part of the top and bottom get cut off, and i have a mediacom box, is there a way to fix this or can I somehow reset the tv?

I don't have this model TV, but I do have Mediacom as my cable provider and they seem to be showing a picture that is cut off on the sides on several local affiliate stations of the national broadcast channels (I have noticed it on ABC and now NBC). It does not matter which picture mode you select (4:3, "normal", wide, full, etc.) because the image is cut off (the ABC logo in the lower right corner only shows half, for instance and other titles are cut off).  This is happening on both my HD TVs (a Toshiba LCD and a Pioneer rear projection) and I can even see the picture zoom/enlarge when coming back from commercial breaks and become cut off.

I posed this question in an AVS forum and got the following response:

"The "zooming" problem might be due to what we call AFD or Active Format Description. This is information in the HD video used to control downconverters to either letterbox or center-cut 16x9 video material for 4x3 sets For example, NBC want to letterbox certain shows because they are not "center-cut safe". They have requested cable companies use this feature in their equipment if they down convert the HD signal for the SD feed on their cable system. If this is the case, you will see switching between letter box and center cut depending on what the program supplier has determined is the best way for the 16x9 program to be displayed in 4x3 and your set won't be able to undo it. I've heard some converter boxes have this feature, but HD sets don't since they are 16x9. So it could be the cable company's down converting equipment. Speculation at this point as to what might be going on at Mediacom but a possibility."

Try setting the set to 4.3 expanded on the aspect ratio. If that don't work try the other aspect ratio settings. That should make the picture fit the screen.

Picture too wide on tv

Sounds like you have the "Wide" mode set to Zoom or wide zoom. Also if you are on Comcast cable the cable box has a setting of Zoom and full. Set your TV's zoom setting to "Full" and the cable box to Full. I don't have an LG so you'll have to find these settings yourself..

I found the user manual online, and the pictures in it are really helpful and make this make a lot more sense, but:
1. Press [SCREEN MODE], to switch the TV aspect ratio.
2. Press [SCREEN MODE] repeatedly until the normal screen displays.
NOTE: • Some programs may not offer all display mode options.
4:3 Programming
[Sidebar] Sidebar displays a 4:3 picture at its standard 4:3 size. Sidebars will be displayed on the right and left edges of the screen.
[Full] Full displays a 4:3 picture at a 16:9 size, with horizontal elongation necessary to fill the screen.
[Cinema] Cinema displays a 4:3 picture at a 16:9 size, with less horizontal elongation necessary to fill the screen because a little bit of the top and bottom edge of the screen will be cut off.
[Wide] Wide displays the center of the picture as original size and the outer sides of the picture will be elongated. The size of the picture will depend on the original signal.
16:9 Programming
[Full] A picture is displayed at 16:9 size as it is.
[Zoom] Zoom displays a 16:9 picture without changing its horizontal and vertical ratio, at its maximum size.
[Cinema] Cinema displays a 16:9 picture with vertical elongation.
[Expand] Expand displays a 16:9 picture with horizontal elongation

I have a Dynex TV and Dish Network receiver. Last year the TV worked fine, I don't think I changed anything, but this year the top of the screen is cut off when I watch NFL games. The top of the score...

You will need to press the "Format" button on your DISH remote This button will have a * on it. By pressing this button repeatedly, you can change the format of the screen set it to normal. Next grab the factory remote for your TV and try the different formats most likely normal will work best on this setting as well.

How come the top and sometimes the bottom of my screen are cut off

Not all bradcast are in 16:9 resolution (wide screen). Most are still in 4:3 (old TV).
Sometime the advertisements are in 16:9 letterbox to project correctly on 4:3 TV and TV logo or titles are on the bottom or top of the picture. If TV is set to project wide screen, these logos or writings will be cut off.
If you have an option to switch TV resolution from remount, you will see whole picture.
Check your TV manual for settings.

I had the same problem with my westinghouse 47 inch HDTV. It turned out that someone had inadvertently hit the "format" key on my satellite (Direct TV) TV remote controller. If you have satellite TV you might want to check this out. I set it back to the previous setting and I get the entire screen. Hope this helps someone.
