On the back of the timer is a black plastic tab, you have to pull out on this tab in order to remove the knob. in other words you have to take apart the control panel to get to the timer just to take off the knob. :I

The start/ stop knob of my whirlpool washer LSQ9564JQ0 just spins. I have to deeply press against the larger part of the timer to move the arrow to the wash settings. I will still start and stop though....

The threads either on the timer knob (part number 3364291) and the timer dial ( Part number 3957849, the larger part of the timer with arrow) are worn. Pull the knob off and inspect the threads. Replace the part with the worn threads.

Lean washer on its back and check for broken wire from the motor wire harness up the back panel.
If you find the wire repair it and make sure the wire harness is secure in the provided clips.

My machine will just stop after the adgitate cycle.

Manually turn the knob to the spin cycle and turn it on.
If it does not spin, replace the lid switch.

If it does spin, replace the timer.

If it will perform all of the functions if you turn your timer knob manually, I would open the console and check for any loose connections, although from your description your timer motor has gone bad (only availible as the whole timer) It can be purchased from online from the manufacture or from a local parts store.
