Electric or electronic typewriter. Electric typewriters usually have manual set margins such as the IBM selectric whic are or should be sticking out the front cover. They do fold up inside so they don't stick out. Again what kind of machine is it?

Need to unlock the margins of a Brother ML500 memory Typewriter

Move the carriage (print head) to the margin you would like to clear. When you hear the beep, hold down the [ALT] key and press [3]. Now use the backspace or the space bar to move the carriage to where you want the margin set. Now hold down [ALT] and press [4] to set the left or [5] to set the right margin. For your further reference, I have included the keyboard special key chart. You might need to download the pic and zoom in to read it.

Change margin

Do you see the lmar and rmar above the number keys printed on the cover? Move the carriage to where you want to set the left margin Then hold down the ALT key and depress the corresponding number key under the lmar symbol. Repeat for the right margin.

Resetting the margins on a manual typewriter.

I can't be for sure if these are auto set margins, but it sounds like they might be. If they are, first move the carriage as far to the right as you can. Hold the Left Margin Set (not Margin Release) lever as you move the carriage all the way to the left. Release the Margin Set Button or Lever. Now hold the Right Margin Set Button or Lever (not the Margin Release), and move the carriage all the way to the right while holding the Margin Set. Once the carriage is all the way to the right, release the Margin Set. Move the carriage to the place you want to set your left margin. Hit the Left Margin Set and then release. Move the carriage to where you want to set the right margin. Hit the Right Margin Set and release it. It gets confusing, but Margin Release does not set margins. Its sole purpose is only to bypass the margins. Hope this helps.

Left Margin:
Move the carrier to the place you want to set the left margin by using (SPACEBAR) or (BACKSPACE). If you need to move outside the current left margin, press (ALT) + (M REL) (3). Press (ALT) + (L MAR) (4). The left margin is now set.

Right Margin:
Move the carrier to the place you want to set the left margin by using (SPACEBAR) or (BACKSPACE). If you need to move outside the current right margin, press (ALT) + (M REL) (3). Press (ALT) + (R MAR) (5). The right margin is now set.

Right margin gone awry! No Manual.

May be a little too late now but...when you get to the right margin and it beeps and you can't go any further, press the mar rel (margin release) button on the top left. Move to where you want the right margin to be and press the mar right button. This will set your right margin farther out.

Margins

Most electronic typewriters work the same way to change margin settings. You use the space bar to move to the desired location then press the right margin key. You should hear a beep. If you need to set it farther to the right of the current position, then use the space bar to move the carrier to the current position, once it stops moving then press margin release then space to the new position then press right margin key.

MARGINS: Left margin space or tab to where you want margin set and depress the mar L key. Sometimes the key has to be depressed as you hit the code key. If you want to move carrige to the left, go to margin hit margin release and bk space to where you want. Same with the right margin only use th R margin key. Code key usually keys have second message are in green, yellow or red. Use code key with the small print on the key to activate that function.... Good luck

2) Press [ALT]+[L MAR(4)]. The left margin is now set.

That is directly out of the manual. I will upload the manual to FixYa, and you will be able to view it from the ML-500 Typewriter's product page: http://www.fixya.com/support/p131634-brother_ml_500_typewriter
