Question about Canon Rebel XT / EOS 350D Digital Camera

1 Answer

Broken MIrror? well your sub-mirror is broken inside of the camera, i had the same problem, it just happens by itself after extended use of the camera, and it is not a means for recall by canon so you have to deal with it yourself.  this website can fix it for $130 and they will replace it with a metal piece so it doesn't happen again(original piece is weak plastic) I just read the above solution.  It looks like I may have the same problem - I have easily taken 50,000 pictures with my Canon Rebel, love it!  A few weeks ago, I was in the middle of a big event when I noticed that 1/2-3/4 of each shot was black - all of a sudden, would never have noticed if I hadn't seen it pop up (ie everything else in the process seemed normal).  I took over 40 pictures, they all had the same result. So, the person mentions that "this site" can fix it for $130 - true?  Is that the FixYa site and if yes, how do i go about it? Do you recommend fixing a camera that "old" (6 1/2 years old)?  Thank You!

Teresalemair persenaly I would not fix a camera that old that has had alot of use, unforteneterly we live in a throw away society. If its possibly to upgrade the camera.

Rather I would put that money into a camera upgrade, this will in the long term allow you to obtain even better photos, as colour and contrast that the new cmos can capture is fair better then the older tecknology. This is what makes the newer camera's better not the amount of megapixels, unless printing bigger 20' x 30' or or doing alot of extreme croping. As the glass in the budget lens does not allow even a 6mb camera to get the best pictures it possibly can as far as sharpness goes.

Linkage problem,

Make sure lens is set on AF and not M. Clean body and lens contacts with a Q-tip dipped in alcohol. Try multiple lenses to make sure it is not a problem with just one lens. Put the lens on M and turn the front and make sure it turns freely and is not stuck by impact/spillage etc. Push down on the release button and make sure you have two distinct 'pops' (release switch may be broken). Gently lift up mirror and make sure that the AF sub mirror also comes up properly. Impact can break the little plastic guide pin for the sub mirror so that it is not in the right position and the AF will not work. Also make sure that the spring that makes the sub mirror come up is in position (they come off). Can be on either the right or left side of the mirror depending upon the model.
These are the steps I would take if you brought your camera into the shop I work at.

Bottom 3/4 of photos are black

Check out this website http://www.lotek.nu/misc/EOS_300D_sub-mirror_repair/

I had the same problem. You can check to make for sure by removing your lens, and carefully lifting your mirror. Does the sub mirror underneath flatten against the other one when you lift it? That's probably what is in the way creating your 3/4 "black" picture. I just repaired mine as in this website, and the mirror moves great now! Of course, I'm used to taking apart laptops and such. If you have a warranty yet, contact Canon. It is a defective issue on there part.

Image Problems

Either your shutter, or the sub-mirror assembly is broken. Purchase a faulty/broken 350D from ebay and use the working parts from your camera on the broken one (i.e., get one with a shot mainboard). For disassembling follow this guide:

Good luck.

I have a Canon Rebel EOS digital. When I take a picture, the bottom two thirds of the picture is black.

Take the lens off and carefully lift the mirror - if the sub-mirror underneath the main mirror doesn't follow the main mirror up, the stop-pin has broken off and has to be repaired by a camera shop. A common problem.

This is becoming a common problem on the Digital Rebel. The pin that activates the sub-mirror ( for autofocus ) has broken off and the mirror box will have to be removed to replace it. It's about a $150 repair.
