Question about Dishwashers

Blinking Green Light

JSROCK - Per your tip below I reset my Kenmore 15879 dishwasher ... then I got 3 more cycles before I had to reset it, then 2 more cycles and a reset, and now I can't get it to complete a cycle ....
Is it a circuit board or what? The clean light Blinks 7 times, pauses and starts blinking again. Any ideas?

The blinking "clean light" is a common problem with some of the Kenmore and Whirlpool models dishwashers. The problem is usually attributed to water supply temperatures being too low when filling. Apparently, there are some issues with the temperature sensing circuits in some dishwashers that causes an error code to be generated if a certain water temperature is not achieved in a specified time interval (this time may differ between models). There is a reset sequence that you can try to clear the fault. Push the NORMAL WASH then HEATED DRY buttons in that sequence two to three times. The unit will enter diagnostics mode, but can be stopped by pressing the CANCEL button. This will clear any existing faults and should return the dishwasher to normal operation.

JSROCK - I have the tech sheet but can not find error codes on it (Part no. is 8524517 for the Tech Sheet). Of course the dishwasher is running now (for 30+ minutes) so I'll have to wait and see if/when it stops again.

Any idea why it seems to be intermitant?

  • todyve4 Jun 24, 2008

Jsrock - I got one cycle on normal with no dishes in it and hte kick plate removed. Put the kick plate back on, loaded up the dishwashwer (lightly), put it on normal cycle and it ran for 18 minutes before the clean light started flashing 7 times, paused for 2 seconds, and kept on flashing, draining itself in the process.

Can you tell when this machine was built from the serial number (FL4313415)?

How do I tell which of the possible reasons (failed heating element, in line thermostat, electronic control board and/or wiring, the main wash pump clogged) is the culprit and which would you look at/ in what order?

    Many thanks in advance

I'll break out my multimeter ... I guess I'll start with the heating element.

  • todyve4 Jun 25, 2008

I couldn't find my multimeter, so I took the bottom of the unit apart and found several pieces of glass stuck in the impeller. I put it back together and ran it empty and it did a full cycle OK. I'll try with dishes this evening ans see what happens.

Let me ask you this, please. My Kenmore Ultrawash QuietGuard 4 (16039) is also flashing 7 times, but this is the second noticeable change. The first is the noise. When we bought this unit it was super quiet, gradually it got loud when running, when it finally quit and wouldn't start I noticed the 7x blinking symptom.  Could the two be linked? Could abad pump cause the 7x blink sequence? Thanks!

How do you change the heating element in the Kenmore dishwasher 16039?

The solution I was posted was for a common problem that many consumers were experiencing that appeared to be a problem, but was actually attributed to something minor. This Tip was also to assist in clearing the fault code to return the unit to operation. Now...if the dishwasher actually has a fault, the dishwasher will fault and tell you by the number of lights in the blinking sequence. Decyphering the blinking light error code will tell you how to trouble shoot the problem. Have you removed the lower panel under the dishwasher door? There is usually a tech sheet located behind the lower panel, or along the interior wall under the dishwasher, that describes all the error codes. Take a look and see if you can find it. If not, post back and let me know.

I got the blinking clean light x 7 and I ended up resetting the unit and everything was fine thereafter. You can reset the unit by pressing "heat dry" followed by "normal" forllowed by "heat dry" and lastly "normal." Dishwasher reset and went through a 16 minute cycle. After that, it ran fine. here is a linked that helped me.

Here's what I could find on the your error code:

A blinking clean light that flashes 7 times and cannot be reset, occurs when the electronic control does not detect a water temperature increase during the main wash. This could be an indication of a failed heating element, in line thermostat, electronic control board and/or wiring. This problem can also occur if the main wash pump becomes clogged and it not spraying sufficiently. I hope this helps you.

PS A faulty door latch can also cause this error code.

According to your serial number, your dishwasher was manufactured in October of 2001. As far as a failed part is concerned, it is hard to determine without knowing the results of troubleshooting any of the components. More commonly, the heating element and/or thermostat goes bad, but you need to be able to prove the components as defective. There should some advice in the tech sheet that details how to troubleshoot your heating circuits. Have you taken any measurements, or attempted any torubleshooting efforts?

That was one of the first things mentioned in paragraph one of my solution. I had assumed you had already checked the pump impeller. If the pump is clogged it will not spray water sufficiently. Lets hope this resolves your problem.

Newulmeagle, check your main wash pump reservoir to ensure it is clear of debris. In many cases the intake to the pump and chopper assembly becomes clogged and can cause excessive noise as well as low pump pressure which could result in the error code you are getting. I hope this answers your question.

I have a kenmore ultra 665 1627. The green front panel light blinks. And we can not run a cycle. Thanks

Ah, the famous (or infamous) Clean-light blinking problem. Watch that blinking light.... Does it blink 7 times, pauses, and repeats? Or does it blink 3 times (or some other number). The most common problem is 7 blinks which means "water not heating error". This could be caused by a bad heating element, a bad thermal cutoff, a bad controller; but the most common problem is that 1 of the 2 switches inside the door latch is not getting engaged fully. This may be caused by something getting spilled (like a soda) into the door latch that is making it stick, or the door strike may be weak and not pressing down on the door latch hard enough. If it's the latch, you would need to take the door apart and remove the latch mechanism (unplug the dishwasher first!), remove the switches, and clean the plastic parts with water, dry it, and then re-assemble. The other thing to check is the door strike, which is supposed to push down the latch. The springiness of this metal part may be weak. You can remove that door strike, bend it down more, and then re-install it. Then you need to reset the controller by running a diagnostic cycle. Do that by pressing the following sequence of keys: Heated Dry - Normal - Heated Dry - Normal; or High Temp - Air Dry - High Temp - Air Dry; or Hi Temp Scrub, Energy Saver Dry, Hi Temp Scrub, Energy Saver Dry; or High Temp Wash, Heated Dry, High Temp Wash, Heated Dry). You will know that you have entered the diagnostic cycle when all the lights light up for a few seconds. Let the dishwasher run the diagnostic cycle for a few minutes, and then press Cancel to stop the dioagnostic cycle and clear the error.
Note: On some of the newer Whirlpool, Kenmore, KitchenAid dishwashers, you start the diagnostic cycle by rapidly pressing the 3 left-most keys in the following sequence: 1 2 3, 1 2 3, 1 2 3.
Good luck!

Error 1 on kenwood dishwasher

Hello.
Manufactured by Whirlpool, Kenmore dishwashers have an electronic control panel that must be unlocked in order to set or make changes to your dishwashing cycle. If an error light is blinking on your dishwasher's control panel, the panel must be reset before you can gain access. Blinking lights on your dishwasher control panel may signal a mechanical problem that needs to be repaired. If the lights continue to blink after you've reset the control panel, contact Sears to service your Kenmore dishwasher or consider troubleshooting the appliance yourself.
1Press and hold the "Heated Dry" button on your Kenmore dishwasher for four seconds to unlock the dishwasher control panel.
2 Press the "Heated Dry," "Normal Wash," "Heated Dry" and "Normal Wash" buttons one after the other, in fairly quick succession.
3 Wait for the dishwasher to run a short diagnostic test.
4 Press the "Cancel/Drain" button at the end of the diagnostic test cycle. This should reset the control panel on your Kenmore dishwasher.

Thanks.

The green clean light is flashing. It will not go off even when we press cancel. The wash cycle was not completed. The model # is 665.17283400.

The green clean light means that your dishwasher isn't heating the water. Go to the link below to see how to reset the error code and check for reasons that the error happened.
