Hi have a plystion 2 the slimline one for a month now. It plays cds great but doesnt read any games i also have a problem with the usb it doesnt pick it up. What can be the fault

Ps 2 can't read all cd hand types. We have NTSC and PAL. So try and buy these cd types to know the one that works on your console. If stillborn, then post again.

If your new PS2 is NTSC and you are trying to play PAL cds then it would not play and also if you it is a PAL console then it won't play NTSC cds. You can program it also to play both cds, its going to cost you any way.
Your laser is probably on its way out -- as a laser starts to fail, it will first stop reading PS2 games (but will read some DVD movies OK). It will then stop reading DVD movies and only play CDs. Finally, it will not read anything at all. You can find a new laser, based on your PS2's model number, at the following website:
When this happens, it's due to a failing laser. As the laser starts to fail, the system will stop reading blue discs first, then dvds, then cds. You can find a new laser at the following website:
Clean the LAsers Lens with Q-tip lightly dampened with Glass cleaner, then dry the lens. Try it see if that gets it going again.
If not your lasers lens and supporting frame is probably melting down. You will need a new laser.
Click on "repair directory" at the bottom of this screen. Then click on "Video Game consoles" Pick a good repair shop.
Likely your lens is just dirty. Ars put up a great tutorial for this repair (I advise you not to play with the lens-adjustment section unless a mere cleaning doesn't work) here:
If it's a Slim, skip the "opening" stuff and just follow the instructions for cleaning the lens, it's already exposed when you open the top of the unit.
Is this a new problem or has your PS2 always had this issue?
You cannot adjust the laser at all and are likely to damage it if you try, you can however clean the laser lens with a CD/DVD cleaning disk and you'd be surprised how often this resolves disk read issues.
Some of these units did have a production fault that prevented them from reading DVD's, if your PS2 has had this fault since new and/or is under 12 months old you could probably have had it repaired/replaced by Sony but by opening it you will have invalidated you're warranty.
