I want to disable the onboard graphics card in an Acer e500 desktop. Just installed a GeForce 8500 GT card and the machine now crashes intermittently so I am assuming the onboard card is causing a conflict

Hello,
From your description, it would seem that the monitor itself could be the problem. If you have a second monitor, try to plug that in and see what occurs. If you have a display, you have located the problem. You may also try to go to the BIOS and disable the onboard video, so that the GeForce will load. It could be conflicting with the onboard video.
Let me know how you make out,
Joe

I want to install a Geforce 6200 graphics card. Do i need to disable the onboard video. If so how do I do that

not a must, simply plug it in. You should get video instantly from the geforce, if not plug your monitor in the onboard video, enter bios. either f1 f2 or delete key, it shows on some side of the screen what button to press to enter setup.

in setup you need to change the setting of the internal video to disabled - go thought the bios and find it, noting bad will happen.

In this desktop the video card has been part of the motherboard so you don't remove it - you insert the new card in the brown PCI-E 16x connector, connect the monitor to it then you go in the BIOS and disable the onboard one.

Upgrading graphics card

Connect the monitor to the onboard video connector first. then
you need to disable the on-board graphics in the BIOS save the setting and shutdown. Then connect the monitor to the GeForce video connector and boot up then you will get a video signal on the GeForce video card.

Installing New Graphics Card. How do you disable the onboard GC?

To disable the onboard graphics go into your CMOS settings and in there you should find something that says Graphics choices should be onboard or add on or some other form. It all depends on who made your BIOS. As far as a sound card not sure.

Disabling onboard video on Acer aspire m1640

you cannot dissable the on-board graphics in the bios, in the graphic options you must choose which port you want to use, if you have a pci express card then chose pci as the primary graphics, press ok then F10 your pc will reboot and the on-board vga won't load up in windows

good luck

Disable the existing video card in device manager and try again. The onboard video will always try to take first spot, so disable it ...your video will still work until you can install the new video card :)

Hope this helps :)

Are You sure the graphics card is not defect?
When I installed a graphics card instead of the onboard
circuit, the SIS Mirage was disabeled automatically.
I have installation CD for the graphics, of course.
Also, I thought that disabeling devices could be done
through the control panel, "hardware devices".
