Question about Sony Audio Players & Recorders

1 Answer

TC-WR99ES Deck powers up with indicator lamps but when I press play, reverse, or ff or rr on either deck A or B, the lamps initiate but no mechanics...also neither cassette door will open with controls. I think I have problem with the mechanism controller IC802 or IC809 which is between the switch and the controller. It is a US model but I have been using it in Japan where the voltage is somewhat less and 50 HZ. Over time I lost control, first over one deck then the other...now I do not have any control. Of the top of your head, do I sound headed in the right direction.

Not knowing what brand/model tape deck you have, I would suggest you make sure the belts are good before you get into replacing servo ICs

Dual cassette deck are often poorly built and full of problem with age. They are typically not worth repair. Get a good deck like the Tascam 122 Mk II as these can be repairs.
I have consulted with clients that have dual decks and the cost to repair will get you a Tascam 122 Mk II in restored condition and it works much much better. I should know as I have been repairing decks for 40 years so far.

Ct-720 tape deck pioneer. only plays backwards and quick. speed adjust pot Works but motor doesn't have power and stops. plays in reverse and the playback rev control won't change play direction.

The tape speed is an indication of another problem. Probably the same as all other mechanisms of this type and that is dried up grease and parts that are not moving as they were designed to.
The deck needs to go to a Technician.

Panasonic RR-930 does not backspace with or without pedal. It engages the mechanism but appears stuck when tape is inserted. Runs fine without tape in deck.

The ancient tape is junk. Buy a new one. You might also try slamming the old tape against a wall or desk to loosen up the tape layers. Then FF and RW all the way.

Tape Transport issue

FF and Rewind are functions of the reels, not the capstans. If the reels fail to rotate in response to capstan-driven tape motion the unit will assume a broken tape or end of tape. I think you have a mechanical reel drive system failure. Take it to a shop for evaluation and correction.

When i push play on either deck - the tape starts to move and then the tape deck switches the tape's direction continually

If you observe the sprockets in the cassette you'll probably see they're not turning. That would indicate a broken belt or something mechanically common to both decks. Deck logic probably interprets the lack of sprocket rotation as end of side and auto-reverses. Take it to a shop.

The power is on but the motor will not turn the tape drive. Does anyone know a good repair shop?

Hmm, when you press play, can you feel the motor turning, do the spindles turn on fast forward or rewind? If so you may have one of two problems. First check to see if the cue button is is depressed. If it is jammed, the deck will FF and RR but won't play. If it's not that, but the motor still spins, the motor is no longer making contact with the flywheel. If you have a repair manual, dismantle the deck and check out the motor contact

Aiwa AD-F800 Cassette Door problem

95% of all tape deck mechanical issues are caused by the belts going bad. if they have not been changed, then goto turntableneedles.com and click on the "find my player" link it will take you to the two most commonly failed belts for your model. They are square belts. If you open it up and see flat belts then email them measurement information by threading a piece of string from around the pulleys where the flat belt is found. ONLY OPEN AND ATTEMPT THIS IF THE POWER UNPLUGGED & YOU ARE QUALIFIED OR EXPERIENCED WITH ELECTROMECHANICAL DEVICES.

Tape deck won't play.

Sounds like the belt that drives the capstan is too slack or decomposed, The capstan(s) which are connected to a geared flywheel, also drives the transport mechanism. There can also be tarnish on the sensor leaf switches, preventing contact. You might try to repair it yourself but, it is not an easy or simple job

Noisy capstan which runs continously

most tape decks are designed so that the spindle will run when powered on. when you press play or record, the pinch roller elevates the tape to the spindle, tape starts to travel.

noise is basically from the mechanism, or deteriorated in time as yours is an used one. if you are lucky to find some good pinch roller rubbers of same diameter, replace them.

Problem with deck B on Pioneer CT-W205R

Better tape decks, like Pioneer, may use a different mechanism for record/play than FF & REW. So it sounds like a belt or mechanical link for the REC/PLAY has failed.
