You need to go into the machine that manages the printer and allow the access denied machine access or to share printer. You may have to run the network setup wizard in order for the machines to recognize each other.

Can't find printer on network

1.How are you attaching to the network printer from your daughters computer? IP address, or by the name of the printer...Also make sure you check you are attaching to the network printer, and not local printer.

2. Install the Microsoft TCP/IP version 6 protocol on both computers by clicking install on your LAN properties, then restart PC. This should work!

Just purchased laptop with windows vista home premium

If your PC has a wireless card, you can setup an AD-HOC network :

If your PC is XP: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/setup/adhoc.mspx

If your PC is Vista: http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/windows/en-us/help/293c504f-b944-4d5d-835c-f080129bd5dc1033.mspx

If your PC only has a wired Ethernet connection, you may still connect the two using a Wireless Access Point/Router.

Once you have the two computers connected, you may do whatever networked operations you would like:

File & Printer Sharing is the most common:

XP: http://www.wellesley.edu/Computing/FileSharing/Windows/win2kxp.html
Vista: http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/File-Print-Sharing-Windows-Vista.html

Printernot shared on my xp desktop to vista lap top

Need more information...
  1. Is this a new laptop?
  2. What version of Vista are you using?
  3. What type of network are you attaching to?

In actuality, a move from XP Professional to Vista Home for example is, from a licensing perspective, a down-grade. Microsoft in their supreme wisdom have removed many of the file sharing features from all "Home" editions of XP and Vista which will prevent you from attaching to printers and devices operating on a domain or even certain workgroups. If this is a new OEM laptop, you may need to pay several hundred dollars to upgrade to Business Ed. or Ultimate Vista. Which will add back the features XP Professional gave you for free.

Here is the article on the MS website

Sharing a printer between a Vista Home Premium and XP Media Center Computer

Hi cavman6

(01) Is the Vista computer able to access ANY shared resources at all on the XP machine?

(02) Are you running any firewall software (other than the firewall built into the operating system) on either computer?

(03) If you are, please, let us know which firewall software it is and, for now, please, disable it.

(04) Do both these computers have Internet access? (I'm assuming they do but I do need to ask.)

(05) Is the printer currently ONLINE and working properly w/ the XP machine?

IF YOU HAVEN'T DONE SO ALREADY, PLEASE, DO THE FOLLOWING:

(06) Assign *both* computers to the same network WORKGROUP.

(07) Ensure that file and print sharing are enabled on the XP machine. If you'd like, do so on the Vista system, too.
(A) How to on Windows XP
(B) How to on Windows Vista

(08) "Share" the printer on the XP machine (in printer properties).

(09) Can each computer now see itself AND the other computer on the network?

(10) Have you added your user name and password that you're using on the Vista system to the users list on the XP system?

(11) If you haven't done so already, please, do this. The user name should have a password associated w/ it. So, if you aren't using a password on your Vista system profile, assign one then add that user's credentials to the users list on the XP system.

Please, post back here w/ what you've tried and the results, your observations and any other comments or questions.

Thank you
BJ @:)
