Question about ASUSTeK P5K Desktop Board - Core 2 Extreme Quad-core, Core 2 Extreme, Core 2 Quad, Pentium D, Pentiu... Motherboard

1 Answer

P5k motherboard New set up with E7200, Corsair 800mhz ram, Palit 8800gt, etc. No beep at first boot up and no VGA signal. Tried alternative ram, removing CPU, switching ram slots, reseating graphics card, another monitor, checked risers, and connections. All fans and LED's working including board, new Silverstone ST50EF-Plus 500w PSU. Not a peep. Haven't attempted to reset CMOS and am reluctant to try. DOA? Thanks

Thanks Eske. I tried removing ram, and the CPU to see if it would complain but nothing.
I'm definitely in the 'noobie' class hence my reluctance to play around with bios, but I'll try it. If that doesn't work it will have to go back to the supplier - who doesn't have the best reputation re RMA service.

Reseing the bios shouldn't be a problem go ahead, or is there something I don't know? does it void the warranty? I don't think so.

Motherboard problem

Hi Fabio,

Nice system you have.

I would change the timings on your RAM in bios setup pages to a slower set of numbers, especially the last one in the timing from say 12 to 15. If that doesn't help, your cool RAM chips may be slightly defective if you purchased these as a Matched Set from Corsair. And were these RAM Chips in the approved list from Asus for your system board?

Corsair has lifetime warranty for their RAM so getting those replaced shouldn't be a problem.

What you want to do is download and burn a Bart PE bootup CD that has Mem Test 86 on it and run that test on your RAM to verify that the RAM may be defective. Corsair will want to know if you have run a RAM test on those chips.

So, try the slower timing settings, even though you are not overclocking them to start with.

Also, can you put each video card on a separate power rail instead of populating one power rail with both video cards?

Lastly, you stated that you can power off, leave the system off for a half hour and the system will boot. This, as you may know, indicates something is getting hot. This could be your Power Supply or your CPU. Have you used canned air to blow out the power supply and CPU fan and heat sink?

Regards,
Worldvet

Your board can only handle 2Gb of total memory.
2 x DDR2 SDRAM DIMMs, Dual Channel DDR2 533/667/800.
Check your manual.

Check in the BIOS that your RAM and / or CPU speeds are correct or put them on auto. Choose Default BIOS settings first.
