Question about Samsung DVD-VR357

DVD will not initialize

I bought my DVD-VR357 last winter. It was working fine a couple of months ago. Now when I load the same type of DVD that did work before, it won't initialize. It asks if I want to initialize and starts the initialization, then it stalls and I see a quick (too quick to read it) error message of some sort and the whole unit turns off.

My DVD-VR357 will record only on DVD + R and now won't initialize on Maxell after going thru HP, NexTech and Memorex. Used to record on all and on DVD - R. What's up with that? Samsung support has no firmware upgrade to address this. It is now a VCR.

I have been recording on DVD +RW's and some of them dod not let me divide the titles, while others do. Nobody at Samsung knows why.

mine is doing the same thingbut it also thinks every tape i try to record on is write-protected, so basically i have to record one time on a +r and then throw the disk away. how annoying

I have the same problem on an older model DVD VR320. Samsung customer service was essentially useless.

I tried the suggested solution and the DVD-RW I used will still not initialize. I am positive I installed the firmware update correctly. Apparently this is an unfixable problem.

I really hate this machine and haven't used it much since I bought it last winter. I had problems with the 1st model I bought and returned it. I've only burned a few dvd's about 6 months ago and now any kind of dvd whether it's a blank one or a store dvd it won't play. Says disk cannot play check the disk. Sooo frustrated. Has anyone else had this issue and how do I fix it? Thanks!

The DVD-RW and DVD+RW no longer wants to initialize. Works fine with DVD - R's.

FIX the PROBLEM by opening the case (5 screws). Take a q-tip dipped in alcohol and barely go under the protective plate and clean the lens. The q-tips were black at first, but after a few times they came out clean. Now all DVD's format properly.

I hate the thing too. I've had to buy the cheap remotes every 3 mths. Technical service knows nothing, I've had 3 probs they couldn't solve & I came here. I had a problem like this one, plus it rejected all of my DVD-Rs. I was afraid to take it apart. So I used the pressure air spray can (with the tiny straw) to get in the open drawer & spray it. Don't get the lens wet, it could leave smudges. Also, you can reset the machine by unplugging it for 1/2 hr. Plug it in & turn on your TV. Hold the fast forward & rewind buttons at the same time for a few secs & you'll see a message saying the machine is reset. Good Luck.

You may have a dirty head on your DVD reader. Suggest getting a good DVD cleaner with at least 6 brushes and see if that remedies your problem. It did mine.

Take the machine apart. (5 screws) 3 in the back, one on each side. Take a q-tip dipped in rubbing alcohol and (squeeze out excess alcohol), and then go under the protective plate and clean the lens. I was skeptical at first to do this, but the q-tips were filthy. After several q-tips, the dvd player now formats all DVDs.

I am trying to record to a blank dvd-r. I load a blank dvd-r into samsung-vr357 and it ejects it saying "Cannot read disc". I never get a chance to Format it or anything.

I bought a lens cleaner and ran it and it still would not accept blank dvd-r. I loaded some old recordings I made to see if they would play and they did. I noticed these were recorded on "Staples" brand dvd-r bought at Staples office supply store. I went out and bought some more of these and they work!! For whatever reason, the unit accepts these and I have made 5 copies and they all copy and play fine. Now i need to go get some more! The Maxell just won't work in my player. Too bad I bought 100!

How to record ?

I don't know a whole lot about electronic equipment, but I've never seen anything connected in so many ways at the same time. Maybe the antenna and one other type of connection. The different signals from all the connections are probably confusing each other. I would try one connection at a time to see if the problem improves. Good Luck.
