Try this...

Hit the eject button. As soon as it makes it half way, take the battery out.
Leave the white cover open, put the battery back in.

This should take the tape cartridge up all the way and eject the tape.

I had the same problem and it ejected the defective tape

Canon XL1S eats tape as soon as it's inserted.

It needs to go in for cleaning and service. It is a vintage recorder and the rubber feed capstans are probably sticky and need replacing.

It is a known issue.

Canon XL1S EJECT TAPE DISPLAY WITH NEW TAPE ... what is the solutions for this

This can be caused by several problems including a bad video drum, the transmission gear in the tape mechanism not engaging properly or a defective clutch in the take-up spool and can usually be repaired fairly inexpensively. However, it's not a user serviceable problem and will need to be repaired by a qualified service technician.

My name is Rick and I'm a professional repair technician with over 20 years in the business and have repaired many of these. I'm semi retired and work from home with little overhead so I can keep repair costs low. If you decide to have the camera repaired, please click HERE for a directory listing that suits your needs.

Hi 8 Tape Will Not Eject

If you remove the power while the basket is halfway up, you should be able to remove the door. Then look to see if the reels are turning when you try to eject the tape. You may be getting an error code that indicates the reels are not turning for some reason. You can assist the reels turning as the tape is ejected if you stick a small plastic pick or a toothpick into the reels to assist the reels turning and then you may be able to remove the tape.

Xl1s issue

You mentioned that you were editing it out which means that it is the video recording issue. When video recording has light or sligh pixilation on the side, the head may need cleaning or tracking system may need adjustment. Initially, try to clean the head with a tape head cleaner, run it for about 10 sec but not more. It this resolve, it was simple head clogging. Otherwise, camcorder needs adjustment by technician. Good luck, James. For further assistance, go to www.camerarepairjapan.com

Tape ejection

The cassette tray motor might is more than likely damaged, and will need to be replaced. Before you go this route, make sure there is no debris inside the unit, causing it not to eject all the way. Unfortunately, this is not a cheap fix. The XL1S parts are not cheap, and they are labor intensive. So be prepared to shop around to get the best price.

Hope this helps some.

Eating Tape when rewinding in vcr mode

look for a tiny pinhole and insert a pin while powered up to reset the device. if no-go, then the take-up reel needs attention...needs possibly a new or well-cleaned-with-alcohol-swab rubber belt
