Question about HP Pavilion N5415 Notebook

1 Answer

HP pavillion acting weird

After installing and running AVG anti-virus, my friends HP notebook wouldnt let her run certain programs, including the add/remove programs, and the command prompt. I don't want her to have to pay a professional to fix it for her, and shes lost all the windows disks it came with. Any help at all would be awesome.

System restore, your description sound like a brontok but hopefully not, just perform system restore, restore the PC to about a day or 2 before you installed AVG.

1.Click Start.
2.Point to All Programs.
3.Point to Accessories.
4.Point to System Tools.
5.Click System Restore.
6.Follow the instructions on the wizard.

once AGV is removed, you may try to look at NOD32 antivirus. its fast and great for my old computers too.

Sony vaio vgn s460 - severely virus infected. Wouldnt let any scans be run. Tried a few methods on the internet (bootable rescue, spybot, avg free scan, etc). Windows gets loaded but a downloaded program...

See if you can boot in Safe mode. If yes, then once up in safe mode uninstall all existing anti virus software's that you have installed. Then download Microsoft Security Essentials. But hope you are using a licensed OS. Download, install, update and then restart. Then do a full scan. This should solve your virus issues

Runs very slow, has been repaired twice for viruses

Have you tried a Disk Cleanup? This can often cause computers to run slowly. Look under Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools.

Removal of AVG8

Try bootin to safe mode by pressing F8 on turning on the system then try to uninstall by going into the control panel [Programs(vista)/Add or Remove Programs(XP)]

By doing this you will be able to uninstall the AVG anti virus.
Then restart and the system will boot in normal mode then install Kaspersky. Never have 2 anti virus in a system. Just a word of caution.
Cheers !

Avg 8 removal problem....

This could be because you did not follow a proper procedure for an anti-virus removal. Nevermind, follow these instruction:
  1. Download CleanUp utility from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301.
  2. Install it and run it
  3. Scroll down and select AVG products and remove them one after the other (if there are more than one)
  4. Restart the computer and install your new anti-virus program
Kindly get back if need any further help
