There are 2 placces on the underside of the monitor for the speakerbar to slide into. For that model You will probably need the external power supply.

Where to connect speaker bar on dell

There should be a wire with a green 3.5mm connector (Looks like a headphone connector) coming from the speaker bar. If you are using a desktop with the stock or built in sound card, there should be 3 inputs on it. Red (Mic), Blue (Line in), and Green (Headphones). Use the green one, this is also used for speakers. If your inputs are not color coded, look real close and you will see a symbol by each one symbolizing what they are. Here is a link to the image so you can have an idea o what you are looking for.

The Dell AS501 doesn't seem to want to connect to my Dell E196FP Monitor.

If there is a power connector for the soundbar, it should be on the bottom of the monitor where all the other connectors are located.

I cannot hear any sound from my Dell monitor 1702FP. Are there speakers installed within the monitor?. VGA cable is connected. When I use a spare monitor using the VGA cable the sound is loud and clear. ...

The Dell 1702FP doesn't have speakers. The specs of the Dell 1702FP are available here: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/monitors/1702fp/en/specs.htm . (BTW neither does the Dell 1704FPT.) However, some Dell monitors can have a sound bar (speaker set-up) mounted on the monitor.

VGA cables don't carry sound. Check if a second cable (an audio patch cable is connected to the computer and the second monitor). (There are some cables that actually bundle the 3.5 mm patch cable with the video cable for convenience. (I've seen a number of DVI cables with that bundle option.) The plugs will separate into separate units at each end.

Other monitors do have speakers built in - look for a 3.5 mm audio input jack with the rest of the input connections on your monitor. There are some monitors that accept an HDMI input with a 3.5 mm audio out jack; these monitors don't have speakers and thus are enabling a daisy chain to connect the speakers to the monitor. So you do need to be careful and look for the audio in label.

You can attach a set of speakers to your computer using the audio out (look for a lime green 3.5 mm jack on the back of a desktop). For laptops or to use the front audio ports, look for a headphone jack.

I hope this helps. Please add a comment with more information about your monitor and computer for additional assistance.

Gradual diming of screen over the past month.

The SPEAKER bar has two fingers on it, you slide out the speaker, I do not remember to slide it to the left or to the right, also for release tab to allow you to slide the speaker out.
Most common failures in the LCD monitors are bad capacitors (bulging top/seal or leaking) in the power supply, failed inverter circuits (blown fuse, shorted transistors, shorted/open transformers), bad lamps (poor solder connections or worn out lamps). You will need to open it up and inspect the inside, see example of failed DELL monitors to get some ideas what to look for: http://s807.photobucket.com/home/budm/allalbums
Post back what you see inside so we can guide you further and it will help out other people in the future also.
