There are three things it could be, the motor that drives the brewing unit, the brewing unit itself or the pressure relief valve. You need to operate while looking inside with a torch to see what is happening. This is done with the back, the top and the beans side side cover removed for visibility.
That looks very similar but not quite the same shapes as Krups have on their XP9000 model. In case you don't know what it's for it wipes without touching across the tamping piston grille to clear any old grounds off that may have stuck on. If you understand the purpose it may help to figure out the where and how. Machine will make a few coffees without it if you need a caffeine fix. On the Krups it would clip around that winged bit of plastic by your thumbnail in the photo. Looks tro me like the brew units are made in the same place with subtle differences for brand & model.
Remove book holder at back by pulling it off by hand. Undo the screws visible at the back cover, there's about 4 or 5 or so there. Unclip that centre back panel now screws are out. Remove clear beans cover, remove water tank, lift up the lid to drop grounds direct to brew chamber. Both side lids in open position. Now firmly grip the top cover and try and slide it directly backwards. If it is stuck a firm thump against the front side of the cavity you removed the water tank from while still pulling the top cover backwards will free it up. The sides lift directly upwards to get them off. When replacing the water tank side panel you need the front door open to clear a little spring leg.
the power on sequence for the XP9000 is 1) Internal diagnostic 2) if no cold water, display notice and wait for water level in cold water tank 2) if water heating block is not hot, display notice and wait for block temperature 3) display "Rinse Press Hot Water" notice and wait for button press 4) rinse 5) display "Select Beverage" and wait for button press, ground coffee flap, or other input switch state change.etc...
in short... its doing what its supposed to.
