Question about Whirlpool Dryers

1 Answer

Dryer overheating. My dryer keeps overheating and turning off . The filter light comes on as well. I think it has to do with the heat exchanger. I am a qualified electrician so this is not too new for me. Any advice will be helpful you know any quirky bits I need to know about.

It ma be an indication of restricted airflow in the venting.
The machine is warning you that the exhaust vent airflow is insufficient. Check the exhaust hose in the rear of the machine and make sure it it not crushed or kinked. The vent pipe should be rigid metal not flexible foil or flexible plastic. If everything in rear looks OK, check the outside vent hood for any blockages. If everything checks out, the exhaust system may need cleaning. Cleaning kits are available at most home improvement centers. or at this website: www.linteater.com

DRYER OVERHEATING:

Heating Element
A defective heating element can make a dryer too hot or not heat at all. . If the element partially shorts out, it can produce heat all the time, regardless of whether the dryer is calling for heat. Remove the heating element to inspect it. The coils should not be touching each other or anything else.

Other Causes and Conditions
Air Flow Problem
Dryers need good ventilation to work properly. If the vent is clogged it can make the dryer too hot. Clean all of the vent tubing thoroughly.

Cycling Thermostat
Although not common, a defective cycling thermostat can make the dryer too hot. The cycling thermostat is supposed to turn on and off the heat to maintain the proper temperature. If the thermostat is defective it may keep the heat on too long. The thermostat is not adjustable or repairable, it must be replaced.

Felt Seal
Most dryers have a felt seal at the front and rear of the drum to keep the heat inside the drum. If the felt seal is worn away or missing, the dryer may keep heating and make the dryer too hot. This is not common.

Blower Wheel
A defective blower wheel will not spin properly and will not vent the hot air, making the dryer too hot. Check to see if there is adequate airflow out of the dryer.

After every load, the dryer lint trap is wet and there's water condensation on inside of the glass door even days after use. I've thoroughly cleaned the ducts and the lint filter as well as inside where...

Is it gas dryer?

If it is might be problem with the heat exchanger, Water is one of the by products of combustion.

By chance do you have a Carbon Monoxide sensor?

Easy way to tell if a cracked heat exchanger is the problem.

Other thought I have is the dryer heating up when its drying, if the heater isn't working and you are throwing wet clothes in there that could be part of the issue.

a couple thoughts anyways

Estate dryer teds840jq2 will not turn on

I recently worked on an estate dryer with a no heat problem. I made a video and in it I show where the fuse is located. I recommend you do a thorough cleanup of the dryer and make sure the vent to outside. If the lint filter chute fills with lint, that cause overheating and that fuse mounted on the housing of the blower will melt. To remedy the probo you replace the fuse only after removing the filter chute and giving it a good cleaning.

Clean the exhaust line connected to the rear of the dryer.
Run a load of laundry with the rear duct removed completely and see if the light comes on.

Goodman furnace went out. Light blinks four times

Your main limit switch is activated. Maybe for good reason. This switch keeps the furnace from overheating. I have the same problem right now and I think my a/c coil may be blocked, limiting air flow through the heat exchanger and the furnace. Does your gas and main circulating fan come on for a few minutes before the switch activates and the light begins blinking?

Check your furnace filter and any return air ducts in your home - see if they are blocked or restricted.
