1. Open up the side of the desktop.
2. Find the batter, a silver coin-like item on your motherboard.
3. With a small flat bladed screwdriver, press forward the release clip. The batterh will spring out.
4. Put the new battery in with the flat shiny side up, just snap it in place.

Which operating system ?
The Compaq Presario CMOS password is an administrative security measure built into the firmware of a Compaq computer.

This password is stored in the motherboard's BIOS (Basic Input Output System) and provides for hardware-level security.

This password may be accidentally set or forgotten over time and must be reset in order to boot the computing system.

Disconnect the Compaq computer from any electrical sources and remove the side access panel from its case.

This may require the removal of one or more thumbscrews on the rear of the computer case.

WARNING: Before you start troubleshooting remember that you are dealing with electricity that can KILL. http://www.kitchentablecomputers.com/static.php - rules

Locate the CMOS battery.

This battery is a round button-type battery located in the bottom-right corner of the Compaq Presario motherboard.

Grip the battery by its edges and pull it straight away from the motherboard to remove it.

Press and hold the power button on the case for ten seconds to remove any remaining electrical current from the computer.

This removes the CMOS settings and returns it to the default state of having no password set.

Replace the CMOS battery.

Replace the computer's side access panel and re-establish any previously severed electrical connections.

Compaq presario sr2150nx battery failed

When the cmos battery goes bad, you can simply replace it, but a dead cmos battery will not stop your computer from booting.

I have a compaq Presario S4100NX that won't keep time. I have replaced the cmos battery, I flashed the bios to the latest version, I reset the bios to manually load default setup, but still no joy....

Does it loose time even with power cable connected? If so I would say your MB has a bad RTC chip and you need to replace the motherboard. Other things to check are make sure the CMOS battery your using is BRAND NEW with a good expiration date. That the contacts on the MB are making firm contact with the battery. Also check to make sure the contacts are CLEAN... no residue on them.

Need to change battery in compaq presario 4640

Unfortunately, most manufacturers will not list the exact type and model of your CMOS (Motherboard) battery; therefore, you will need to open up your computer, locate the battery on your motherboard, and record the information about it such as voltage, chemistry, wiring, and packaging. If possible, remove the battery and take it to the location you plan on purchasing a new battery from. You may be able to find replacement batteries at a nearby electronic store like Radio Shack, or online via a Google search.
