There could be many reasons, but since you mentioned you JUST installed the 07 for XP it could be that the:
the soundcard drivers may not be installed or the XP07 does not have drivers for your soudcard, best move is locate your soundcard brand and model then download one from the internet, third-party drivers and utility (for high def) can be used, but i'de recommend software from the manuf.
