Question about Cuisinart CBK-200 Bread Maker

3 Answers

My new cuisinart breadmaker has a strong nasty smell coming from the bottom. I have already returned one for the same reason so I don't want to send this one back. It makes my kitchen smell really nasty. I have tried washing and drying the bottom several times but it doesn't help. I have called your help line and they couldn't assist me. The machine makes great bread but it is just too smelly when not in use. Please help!

There is a smell similar to cabbage skunk that is detectable in area where my Cuisinart sits, have cleaned it but smell continues.

    It is nasty!

Also I tried to make a pumpernickel loaf and it literally came out with burnt bottom, top and sides.

I used the whole wheat cycle is this the correct ccycle ?

Mine smells too! Everytime I walk past it I smell something skunk-like. It's not very nice at all.

I've had it for a few only a few months and I thought perhaps it was the manufacturer's coating or something that hadn't burned off yet.... I'm not pleased to read that might not be the case. I have washed it repeatedly.

It has only been used to make gluten-free bread so I thought *maybe* that could account for the smell (I don't know why I thought that, I guess I'm stretching for a possible explanation here!)

At the moment I'm running an empty cycle with the lid open because I was hoping that would take care of the problem. I'm a little less optimistic now, having read this. We shall see.

My mother in-law has a cuisinart with the same issue. She got it in January and just last month it developed a "skunky" smell. I had the same thing years ago with a Black & Decker model. Sounds like it's more comman than I originally thought. It would be nice to know if it's coming from the mechanical/electrical system or if it's something from the process of making the bread.

My black and decker bread maker has a skunky smell... I wonder if the belts are all sourced form the same place? Has anyone found a solution for this? The smell is really bad in my kitchen!

I think I was able to remove the smell by opening the bottom and cleaning everything I could get to with vinegar. In the future I will be very careful to not spill anything inside.

Hmmm... I'm back again. My machine still smells terrible! I live in a relatively small, open plan apartment and this bread machine is smelling up the place. I am very unhappy with this because I am otherwise pleased with the bread it makes.

I removed the bottom plate to see what is causing the smell. I have NO doubt whatsoever that the problem is the rubber belt, which I believe controls the kneading paddle. I've taken to leaving it outside to air but am stumped for a permanent resolution.

Any remedies for stinky rubber that I've come across involve liquids, heat or powders etc.. just things in general that wouldn't be prudent near the electrical panel, as well as not wanting to take the risk of damaging the machine and having it stop working altogether.

I got it at Costco in January, no hope of returning it there. Has anyone contacted Cuisinart about this? I wonder if they are aware of the issue if it seems to be widespread. I am in Ontario.

What happened with the B&D? Did the problem ever resolve? Irony is that I had returned a smelly B&D in order to get the Cuisniart! Same problem, but IMO I think it was worse with the B&D and the Cuisinart is a better machine over all (if it didn't smell so bad!)

Where is the ol coming from?

There is a rubber seal in the bottom of your pan that has failed. There is grease under that seal to keep the spindle that turns the paddle lubricated. If your breadmaker is still under warranty contact Cusinart to get help. If it is no longer under warranty then you could still probably order a new pan from them. If you just want to get rid of the darn thing you can always send it to me. At least that way it won't end up in a landfill. You can reach me at

I think I blew the fuse on the machine... heard a loud pop followed by the smell of something burnt... Please tell me this can be fixed...

If there was a bang and a burnt smell then you have destroyed the breadmaker. It would be cheaper to buy a new one than trying to get it repaired.
You should have connected the breadmaker to a stepdown transformer from 240 volts to 110 volts.

The screw that holds the bread paddle came out! :(

The sealed bearing in the base of the bread pan has probably failed. You will probably need a new bread pan. Hank
