Last year my sister had it onnected to a modem during a lightning storm but it was turned off. (she didn't know she had to disconnect from the outlet. Anyway, the fried the modem and that was replace however my laptop would start up for about 4 seconds then stop. The yellow light stays lit and occasionaaly if i het the cd rom dirve enough it will open. The blue light is only on when it is trying to boot.
Is my laptop fried or are there things I can check to see if maybe they neeed replacing. I hate to toss a fairly good laptop with Windows XP pro when i can spend little to repair it
If your laptop ports are burnt i do not think there can be any done however if it is a problem with the software u can try this
turn your laptop on and start hitting the F8 key it will take to an option to safe modem u need to go in there by selecting it through the arrows keys and also u need to hit enter after u selected that then u can run a system restore or just in run iexplore and then u can hit enter again once thats done then u need to click on start and then go into all programes then accessories -system tools and then ssystem restore . it should definately work and select the apporiate date and see then restart do not even by mistake turn the laptop off while doing this ,,,
thanks and let me know if it worked out for u ,

Your dial-up relies on the internal modem to be working properly.
Check for your modem status using Device Manager.
If the listing for the modem has any yellow or red highlighting, then the modem software or hardware needs to be changed. If you leave your PC plugged into a phone line, internal modems are easily destroyed by lightning storms or surges in the phone line. If the Device Manager looks okay, then call your Internet Service Help Desk.
Is the manufacturer's warranty still valid?
Did you purchase the computer via a credit-card that "doubles" the warranty?
Did you purchase an "extended" warranty from the manufacturer, when you "registered" it?
Did you purchase an "extended" warranty from the retail store?
Otherwise, find the nearest authorized HP repair outlet, and get it fixed.
Terrible storm, did that include lightning ? If you re-installed windows, did you re-install the correct Acer drivers ? Turn off the computer and take the battery out of the laptop over night and then put it back together and 10 to 20% of the time, it re - boots and un-freezes the modem... The modem has a small brain that is why u unplug the battery over night to try to get it working correctly again.... Also check for Acer drivers for that modem..... If it still does not work then you will have to replace the modem with a usb dongal type modem like US Robotics for about 25 to 35 plus shipping.... http://www.ecrater.com/product.php?pid=555167
US Robotics 56K modem w Dongle cable pcmcia USR CC1560
I hope this helped you Thank you Techlahj
Try taking the battery out and leaving it out, then plugging it in and see if it works on power. If it does, unplug it and try seeing if the battery works again.. If not, the battery is faulty and needs replacement.
There is a high probability that your laptop has been fried, especially if it was plugged into the mains at the time of the lightning strike.
A lightning strike could damage many components and even if you could get it fixed (most likely require a motherboard replacement) there are no guarentees that some other component won't fail in the future.
If it was me, I would put my money towards a new laptop and get a surge/lightning protection power board and disconnect the laptop from the main during a lightning storm.
If so then they may have been a change in your program environment. If you do not remember what changes were made or what other programs/changes caused since it last worked -then try reverting to the earlier environment by doing a Restore to a date when you last rembember it worked.
