Can't connect my JVC camcorder to my PC

Hi there, I have a JVC GZ-MG50AG 30Gb camcorder. I have had it for about 3 years and so far no problems. Until today. I connected to my PC with a USB cable and the PC recognises an external hard disk for about 2 seconds then the connection drops. It does this repeatedly without making a connection. There is video on the camera that I want to download and then clear it in time for holidays.

Can you help

Where do I find the driver? And how do I install it? As I said before, the downloading was working fine before but now I can't connect. Can you identify a driver for me?

  • pghc Jun 22, 2008

I've tried connecting to a laptop as well. But still not connecting.

  • pghc Jun 22, 2008

I've tried another USB/miniUSB cable but still nothing.

Found this possible solution on a different forum:

"The first action you should take to resolve a USB problem is to disable the Save Power option in the Device Manager for the each of the USB Root Hub entries. Up to five entries called USB Root Hub can appear under Universal Serial Bus controllers. Open the Device Manager by entering devmgmt.msc in the Start => Start Search box. Open each of the USB Root HubSave Power option under the Power Management tab by removing the check mark that enables it.

entries and disable the This can also happen when a USB device is drawing power close to the maximum limit for USB connections. Many laptop computers don't provide enough power for the most demanding devices.
Simply disconnecting and then plugging the device in again often works. You could also try connecting a device that uses less power, such as a USB modem, and then connect the camera while the other device is still connected. Doing that seems to make the USB bus ready to receive the more demanding device.

If none of those solutions work, try connecting the camera through a self-powered USB hub that provides several USB ports by connecting to one of them on the computer. Buy only a high-quality brand-name USB hub, such as the Belkin Hi-Speed USB2 4-Port Hub, because cheap hubs can themselves be a source of problems."

It may be only a cable problem with your computer.

Many Camcorder users have faced problems while connecting
their camcorder to their PC. One of the most common problems is ?no activity? after connecting the camcorder to the PC. The found new hardware wizard does not run and fails to detect the camcorder.
This can mean two things. Either the DV port on the Camcorder
is not working or the FireWire cable is faulty. Try using a different FireWire cable. If the camera is still not detected by the PC, try connecting it to a different PC. If the Camcorder is still not detected, then your camcorders DV port is most likely at fault.

Confirming that the FireWire Port on you PC is working fine You can check the status of the FireWire port from under Device Manager. To access the Device Manager, Right Click on My Computer and then click on Properties. Select the Hardware tab and click on Device Manager. If you cannot see the FireWire port in the list, then it is not inserted properly into the motherboard. If you see a Yellow exclamation mark, then you need to install the drivers, which are usually bundled with a Floppy or CD with the FireWire card.

Your dv camcorder needs a firewire connection (ieee 1394) in order to download video to your PC if your computer (PC) did not come with a firewire port, so you will have to buy one and install it, & if your camcorder did not come with a firewire cord so you have to purchase a cord too.

Your camcorder has only a USB cord and that is used for downloading stills from your camcorder, when capturing video just make sure your camera is in playback mode.

Hope this initial info helps you solve your problem...

Kindly rate my solution if this one solve your problem..

Please ensure the leads and connectors are not worn, and working correctly.
If the conections are poor, it may recognise the unit, but fail to transfer data.

Try using another USB cable just to make sure that its not a cable problem, if its still the same problem if you're using a memory card on that camera try putting that card on a card reader and that way you can get the file that you need..

Hope thta helps...

For time being i would suggest u to use the a friends computer to transfer the media to some device

Posted on Jun 22, 2008

  • dewan nafees ahmed Jun 22, 2008

since u said u were downloading fine before few days

u must be having the drivers in the CD given along with you and u can use the same for re installation

  • dewan nafees ahmed Jun 22, 2008

that clearly states that problem is not with drivers and ur computer.

    PROBLEM IS WITH YOUR CAMERA

so i would suggest you to make sure if unit is having full charge.

also try using a different battery

it can be the low battery issue mostly.
but please do the step by step trouble shooting

Try another usb port for example in the back. Also you can attempt to connect the camera to another computer.

You need to install the drivers BEFORE connecting pc to camcorder

If drivers were already working on this pc then it is either a cable problem, a problem with the pc, or a low battery problem, it is unlikely that you have a problem with the camera.
Try first disconnecting usb and power cable from pc for ten minutes or so, also remove batteries from camera for a while. Then connect everything back and try again. This will solve eventual troubles from electrostatic charges on usb.
    Test a new cable.
Check that you have enough power on camera batteries.
If it is none of the above it may be a problem with Windows, test camera on a different computer to verify.

    Regards

It's definitely an internal problem in your camera and it sounds like you don't have any warranty after 5 years. I don't have a step-by-step help guide for you since I don't know about this camcorder but in my opinion, if the camcorder is really that good, it's worth the repairs. Though HD camcorders are getting cheaper these days...

Don't know where to find model number

Well, actually, it is only 1 year and 3 months old.

Amazon claims the model number is GZ-MG77US, hope that helps, it doesn't show up on amazon, why do you need to find it on your camcorder anyway; it should at least be on the manual.

I had the same problem. Just install nero (7), create a dvd-video and import the files via nero to a folder.
It worked for me.
