It's probably that the A/V plug has become faulty: http://www.fixya.com/support/t980272-a85_lcd_stays_off_in_all_modes_except

Stitch assist = panoramic view

since this is just another shooting mode on the camera and that even if you set your camera to another shooting mode, it reverts back to stitch assist, you may need to set the camera's settings back to default. here's a screenshot on how to:

I am unable to see what I am taking a picture of.

Think that you might have accidentally pressed the DISP or DISPLAY button on the back of your camera. This manually turns the LCD display on and off to save batteries. You would then use the optical viewfinder in its place. To turn the screen back on, just press the DISP button one more time.

Close up photography for canon S80

You can use your Canon s80 for close up photography. Turn your dial mode to SCN. It has a selection for digital macro. Check your users manual for further instruction.

Good Luck and I hope this helped!

Canon powershot A520 doesn't work in camera mode. I can look at and edit pictures in viewing mode, but switching to "camera" won't let me take pictures... in this mode it also lets me view pictures already...

Hi!
Do other buttons work? If so, the switch could be broken because it sounds it doesn't switch to the CAMERA mode, just stays at the VIEW mode.
If you're not experienced in repairs, you should give it to a local repair shop or Canon service center.

Sorry for the bad news. I repair these cameras very often.

Try to see if you can connect the cable to a TV and see if it will do the same thing.

Example: camera - cable plug - to Input of TV.

In shooting mode press DISP. The display mode changes with each press.

Standard>Detailed>Off

I think you have it currently set to off.
